Venturing a guess on this one is pretty tough. If, between the two of them, they couldn't manage to remember to do it [more than one it?].....how could I possibly [vicariously] 'remember' what 'it' was  ?

Though you're the first to have asked it here, I know you're not the first to have wondered :D .

If the author wanted you to know he would have told you.

Yes, that's true, too.

And, as for "vicariously," being "1000 Kisses Deep" puts you pretty well out of view. Not much way of knowing what they were doing, and forgetting to do, way down there  .

hi!
1000 ksiises deep is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard.. it is so deep in my heart...maybe because i felt just like this song was adressed to me..
i first heard of it when i broke up with my boyfriend... the words drescribed exactly my situation:

"you win a while and then it's done-
your little winning streak.
And summoned now to
deal with your invincible defeat"

i had just started to feel comfortable and sure about our relationship when suddenly..it ended
"...You live your life as if it's real"
i kept thinking what would happen if we got back together-
what we would do. i kept thinkin that what happened cannot' be true
"....And maybe i had miles to drive,
and promises to keep"

we lived about 200 km away from each other..
he promised (and i believed) that we would stay together, maybe even get married someday.
you ditch it all to stay alive
i had to stop dreaming and go on with my life
i blessed our remnant fleet
my friends who supported me
and then consented to be wrecked
i couldn't stop thinking about him..i thought will never get over him
i'll never be happy again

and now for my favourite part
i guess they won't excahnge the gifts that you were meant to keep
i had given my heart and soul and i cannot take it back although i would like to.
And quiet is the thought of you
I never speak about him with my friends but secretly i keep thinking about him.
the file on you complete
i spent enough time with hime to get to know him.. so i have "file" in my memory how he would react to something, how he spoke, how he smiled etc.

and now for the question:
Except what we forgot to do
For me it meants the plans that the couple spoken in the song (or me and him) never fulfilled. There was much talk about e.g. a trip to paris but it was postoponed and they never reached paris because their relationship ended before that.. the author forgot about it but later he remembered..this and everything else that was planned but was never fullfilled.
and the chorus:
and sometimes when the night is slow,
the wreched and the meek
we gather up our hearts and go
A Thousand Kisses Deep

these are the moments when one's heat is not aching about the past..
there are only good and memories...you have peace..you know what you had was perfect

ok, it is probably too personal and i have written too uch but i wanted to show you how this song makes me feel..
it is one of the best songs for me exactly because it is so personal...
sorry bout the spelling mistakes i know there are at least a few..

Dear Greta ~

Thank you for giving your serious answer, and lending insight for icecreamtruck, through your own personal, poignant experience and memories, that align themselves so well with the song. I have experiences that align themselves similarly, yet are not so recent, and hence so fresh, as yours. Yours work so much better as a result of their being so. Thanks for all the relevant detail. I'm certain that icecreamtruck will find it as helpful as I found it touching.

Love,
Lizzy

P.S. You may want to ask Jarkko to remove the first posting  , as they appear to be absolute duplicates [but just in case the second has a desired change in it, I'd ask for the first to be removed].
