I'd have to plump for his debut. For me, it's the most coherent as an 'album' - more than the sum of its parts, so to speak.

I voted Recent Songs because it is a brilliant, beautiful and totally underrated album. It contais some of Leonard`s most beautiful melodies and most skillful lyrics. :)

I voted Recent Songs before I saw your post and I totally agree.
Well, I find The Traitor quite boring and I don't like Leonard's french pronunciation so much, but the rest of the songs are songs I love. "Recent Songs" is the albm out of which I really can't say for sure which song is my favourite. The Window holds a very high place in my top 30 LC songs, and then there is Humbled In Love, which I also like A LOT and the Gypsy's Wife and Ballad Of The Absent Mare are just amazing.

Even though my most most favourite songs aren't from this album, there is a general feeling in it much more special that in the others in my eyes (and ears  ). :)

I voted for SOLAH, as it's the one I listen to the most and the one that contains my two all-time favourite Cohen songs (LYM and DRR).

However, 'favourite' doesn't mean best: for all round consistent quality, I'd give the palm to either Recent Songs or Various Positions.

For me it has be to Songs of Leonard Cohen, for the simple reason it was the first one I heard and it can take me right back to that time nearly 40 years ago.
And of course it is a brilliant album, flawless in my opinion.SOLAH is a very close second!!

They are almost all my favorites, but because RS is the one I'm listening to most often now and rediscovering the beauty of the lyrics and melodies, that is what I voted for. Next month it will probably change.

Difficult, they're all special to me in their own way. I finally went for Songs Of, as for a debut album it's stunning, it's got several of my all-time favourite songs on it, and for me it really sums up what Leonard is all about. Runners up were SOLAH, New Skin and Recent Songs.

My favorite Leonard Cohen album is "Various Positions." I could listen to that album all day and all night. (That and Grateful Dead's "American Beauty" are my two favorite albums of all time.) The first Leonard Cohen album I ever bought was "I'm Your Man." It came out when I was 16.

I wrote reviews of both of those albums on Suite101. Here are the links:

Various Positions: http://folkmusic.suite101.com/article.c ... -positions

(I also posted articles about "Death Of A Ladies' Man" and "Dear Heather.")

How hard is this to do. As you all know, it just depends as to what mood you are which defines which album is your favourite. At the moment I voted for Recent Songs.
Tomorrow I will probably like Songs Of LC or The Future or New Skin.

Actually I think I prefer the live albums to the studio ones. ;-)

My favourite is definitely 'Songs of' because it was introduced to me by Vicomté when we first met (I was just 18yrs.) and gave me an appreciation of LC's songs throughout my adult life. My least favourite is 'Ten New Songs' but I do listen to it from time to time and like some of it a lot and some not so much!

Ten New Songs is LC's most consistent album by a country mile.Every track is good.Various Positions is my second favorite but it certainly has a couple of clunkers,''the captain'' anyone??

For me it's between Recent Songs and Field Commander Cohen, both from 1979, both having Raffi Hakopian's gorgeous violin. Some of my favourites are on both, the Window especially. I love Absent Mare on RS, but I think FCC edges ahead because of that vibrant performance of Memories - just brilliant ! Glad to see Various Positions doing well - I have a soft spot for that because it was the first one I fell in love with ; once I heard Night Comes On I was hooked !
