Another Snowman......

Postby Lilifyre » Wed Dec 30, 2009 6:46 am

I know it's not exactly a song, but the recitation of 1000 Kisses Deep is a favorite of mine and since it is accompanied by music, well, it loosely fits the catagory of song. It's one of my favorite writings of Leonard and I found myself enthralled by it recently. I put it on repeat and began drawing. I'm no artist by any means, but I did come up with an interesting piece, IMHO, so I thought I'd try to share it with you.

A snow-Leonard! That's great, I should make one of those in my yard (except it's too cold for the snow to stick together...). You get the pathos in his face, too. I also love that poem, and especially when Leonard recites it, which he does with such, well, pathos, and yet, oddly, happiness, too, in that he seems grateful to have had whatever (or whomever) he once had, before he lost it (or her) and is now out in the rain and sleet. You just want to hug the guy.

Did you hear his alternate version of this poem, as performed at the latter shows on the US tour (with the different final verse?). It's very good, and wraps up a bit more neatly (and sadly).

(p.s., I see you were able to get your picture into your post! Yay!)

Lilyfyre: Excellent - I'm glad you managed to post the image on here.

Lisa: Can you specify the verse that you mention here. The poem touches me deeply, as I can identify with the schizoid position that it enscapulates.

Love to all, John E

Lili, you say you are not an artist, but I think you are. . . thank you for your wonderful drawing of a Snow Leonard - how touchingly sweet!

Hi John (and anyone else!),

Sure, here are the different words (different from earlier shows such as the one on Live in London) that he spoke in Las Vegas (followed by a youtube link for your enjoyment!)

Don't matter if the road is long
Don't matter if it's steep
Don't matter if the moon goes out
And the darkness is complete
Don't matter if we lose our way
It's written that we'll meet
At least that's what I heard you say
A 1000 kisses deep.

(then the ususal "I loved you like a snowman" verse, and then this new ending)

Well, that's my story
I admit it's broken and it's bleak
But all the twisted pieces fit
A 1000 kisses deep.

Here's Albert's video from Las Vegas:

And here is a video of an early song version, with some of the above lyrics in it:

Lisa, thank you so much for posting the link to the LV show and transcribing the alternate version of 1000 Kisses Deep. I think this has become one of my very favorite songs/poems of Leonard. It never ceases to bring tears of joy and sadness.

You're very welcome! And, if you've not come across this before, here's another spoken version of A 1000 Kisses Deep! This one has bits of the versions we've been talking about (including the song version on Ten New Songs), plus more "new" verses (which I will not transcribe, because I don't have time at the moment! It's better to hear it from Leonard, anyway.) Enjoy!

I love your drawing Lili! It's very original and always better when it's done with the inspiration so that it has a personal meaning for you.

Hi Lisa,

Thanks so much for posting the extra verse and the Las Vegas video, which I hadn't seen. I have the Mount Baldy version on an old video...this was the first version of the song that I knew - some years before the version on "Ten New Songs".

All good things, John E

That's a great drawing, Lili, thanks for sharing. :)

Oh tangle of matter and ghost
Oh darling of angels, demons and saints
And the whole broken-hearted host
Gentle this soul..."

Well, let's see, Pete?!?!?! I'd be willing to take you up on that offer, however, somehow I missed the post eluded to by John E about you and your "snowman". So if you can point me to the reference I'll take it under advisement ;-)

So glad everyone seems to like my SnowLeonard.

Lisa, thanks for the link. I just checked it out and found there is no need to transcribe. If you click on the "more info" at the side above the link it's printed there. Here's the words from a copy/paste:
Don't matter if the road is long
Don't matter if it's steep
Don't matter if the moon is gone
And the darkness is complete
Don't matter if we lose our way
It's written that we'll meet
At least, that's what I heard you say
A thousand kisses deep

I loved you when you opened
Like a lily to the heat
You see, I'm just another snowman
Standing in the rain and sleet
Who loved you with his frozen love
His second hand physique
With all he is and all he was
A thousand kisses deep

I know you had to lie to me
I know you had to cheat
You learned it on your father's knee
And at your mother's feet
But did you have to fight your way
Across the burning street
When all our vital interests lay
A thousand kisses deep

I'm turning tricks
I'm getting fixed
I'm back on boogie street
I'd like to quit the business
But I'm in it, so to speak
The thought of you is peaceful
And the file on you complete
Except what I forgot to do
A thousand kisses deep

Don't matter if you're rich and strong
Don't matter if you're weak
Don't matter if you write a song
The nightingales repeat
Don't matter if it's nine to five
Or timeless and unique
You ditch your life to stay alive
A thousand kisses deep

The ponies run
The girls are young
The odds are there to beat
You win a while, and then it's done
Your little winning streak
And summon now to deal with your invincible defeat
You live your life as if it's real
A thousand kisses deep

I hear their voices in the wine
That sometimes did me seek
The band is playing Auld Lang Syne
But the heart will not retreat
There's no forsaking what you love
No existential leap
As witnessed here in time and blood
A thousand kisses deep
I noticed he uses verses that he also used in other songs (i.e. Boogie Street). Very interesting to compare the different versions.

Thanks, Lili, I did not notice that the last youtube link contained the lyrics! And they really are a varied bunch of lyrics, too. I didn't notice a date for this recording, but I would guess that it predates Ten New Songs, since it mixes and matches a variety of lyrics.

It is so very interesting to see how Leonard's songs and poems evolve. I think that his performance of A 1000 Kisses Deep from the tour (any version) over the past 18 months or so is the most heartfelt and emotional that I've heard. Of course, I think that his performance in general from this tour is amazing, and the tour versions of all of his songs are among my favourites, for the sheer depth of Leonard's performance of them. I can't get anough of Live in London!

Cheers!
Lisa
