totally inaccurate view on dance me to the end of love
totally inaccurate view on dance me to the end of love
hello people,
I know that much has been written about the meaning of dance me... and by people who know much more about the subject than me, however I just wanted to present my view on dance to the end of love...
now, first of all, I have to explain that I'm in a situation where I've totally fallen for someone and I know that it will never work (mostly because she told me she wasnt interested more or less directly ). And although I know this, I still try to be around her as much as I can and hope this will eventually let me just stay a good friend. And this is where the song comes into play. In a way, this song, (although probably not intentional by LC), says exactly what I would say to her... just stay with me until I have gotten over you... - dance me to the end of love... dance me through the panic til I'm gathered safely in...
Dont really know why I post this, but anyways... here it is
Does anyone else have any songs that , although it may not be the "correct" meaning, carry a special meaning for them?
Arno

Thank you for sharing this, Arno. In my eyes, this is interesting to share the different subjective points of view.
I think that I have already answer your question in the discussion on The Butcher.

The way you express your own associated meaning for these particular lyrics also makes sense and makes your perspective very clear, Arno. There is that panic that comes with unrequited love, fearing that they'll leave before your own adjustment to the situation occurs. It's a different kind of loss, with the latter much more personally 'manageable' and easier to accept.

Hi Arno
I like your idea of these lines i haven't really thought about it myself that way but it is a good interpertation.
the lines:
I guess they won't exchange the gifts
That you were meant to keep.
And quiet is the thought of you
The file on you complete,
Except what we forgot to do,
A Thousand Kisses Deep.
The song seems to be about death or something similar but to me it is exactly the way how i feel about my exboyfriend. we had such great plans- everything was ahead of us, we were happy, everything was perfect and... suddenly it ended.I got to know him but many our plans were unfullfilled. I still think about him a lot, secretly while with friends i try to laugh at him (quiet is the thought of him)

That's really moving Greta,
When I read Arno's first post that same song (1000 kisses) came up in my mind as "having special meaning". 1000 kisses has similar effect on me as for you, but it evokes the future rather than the past. Kind of like a fast forward scenario.
Love is strange.

Arno, I think this is such an important point. Personal interpretations carry much greater weight than the single one an artist might have intended. That is what art is for, isn't it? Relating something poetic to your own life, to make your life more poetic and meaningful.
I was astonished when I discovered that 'Alexandra Leaving' was about Anthony and Cleopatra, as I had related the song to my own situation (loving someone you shouldn't and cannot be with).

Hi Arno,
Your words sound true and sad.
Not That it's any of my business, but if I were I would try relating to some other song. Perhaps it's time you began to laugh and cry about it all again.
Or maybe: "I looked for you and you were gone / So lady, now I'm going too".
Because "It looks like freedom but it feels like death / It's something in between I guess / It's closing time".
I wish you luck and love.

thank you yoav,
I'll try... my problem with closing time is that I love the lyrics but I somehow dont like the music that much... so I'll stick to the text.
and to the not any of your business part: if I would want to keep it to myself I wouldnt post it here
thanks for your input, and take care

Dance me to the end of love
This is one of my favourite songs and I think that the end of love will be when I die and my relationship with my life-long partner ends. I haven't analysed the words at all but the general feel of the piece with the wonderful music gives me that feeling. I just think it is so romantic. Of course it may be because I am now middle-aged and have been married for nearly 40 years and so have a different perspective from someone still forming relationships.

Hi Izzybizzy ~
The magnificence of lasting love is how the song affects me, too, overall. I was stunned the first time I saw its being connected to the Holocaust and other things. So much I'd missed in it, yet so much I love with the way it causes me to feel. I would feel as you, if I were married to my 'true' love.
Welcome to the Forum ~ and congratulations on your long-lasting marriage! [Tee-hee] ~ it seems we've moved the bar for 'middle-age' . Being married for almost 40 years; if you were 10 at time of marriage would put you at 50; if 15, at 55; if 20, at 60. Seriously, where does middle-age end and old age begin, anyway, and shouldn't there be something in-between those two categories?

Dance me to the end of time
Hello Lizzytysh
I knew somebody would pick me up on that age thing - Married at 19 for 37 years makes me 56 and once you get to that age middle-age is anything you want it to be. Glad you feel the same as me about the song.
I don't tend to dwell on the words of any of Leonard's songs too much. They are just so poetic that I feel it is an invasion to dissect them. Maybe that's because when I was at school, ( and that was a while ago!) we had to analyse poetry by Wordsworth etc for exams, and it somehow took away a lot of the enjoyment of just reading the poem.

Hi Izzybizzy ~
Being married for 37 years, you can call yourself anything, too! That in itself is an accomplishment! Trust me when I tell you that, on the age thing, and the terms for the years that go by, I'm not laughing/teasing at you, but laughing/teasing with you ! I feel a tad 'in denial' to say "middle age," yet I'm certainly not "old," either! There's gotta be a middle ground for us there, somewhere.
"They are just so poetic that I feel it is an invasion to dissect them." ~ I understand this 100%. I find all of the alternative interpretations very interesting and enlightening, and they add to the song. However, could I live without a single interpretation? Yes. "They are just so poetic that I feel it is an invasion to dissect them." I understand. The whole really can be greater than the sum of its parts, in the way it filters its way through my being, or that my being is filtered through it.
~ Lizzy
By the way, my takeoff on your name stems from two things ~ one is that I went, for awhile, by the name of Izzy. The second was that, when I first saw your name here, I suspected [wrongfully, as it turned out] that perhaps someone already here took on another moniker, as a takeoff on mine, incorporating the addition of "bizzy," i.e. "busy" [there are reasons for that suspicion to have arisen ].

Re: totally inaccurate view on dance me to the end of love
Hi Arno,
Your post made me register just to say I hope you are "gathered safely in". You also made me think of a song by Sheryl Crow, Strong enough.
Lie to me, I promise I'll believe
Lie to me, but please don't leave
I hope you have found peace and love.
