Leonard Cohen and The Christmas Holidays.

Postby Cohen Knight » Fri Dec 12, 2003 12:17 am

I'm in the process of puting together a Christmas compilation for the season. So far this is the track list.

1. Irish Christmas Song (Pogues)
2. The Ragpickers Dream (Mark Knopfler)
3. Danny Boy (Johnny Cash)
4. Santa Clause Is Coming To Town (Bruce Springsteen)

If there is a way of incorparating Leonard Cohen's music I'd love to do so in some way. If anybody has any suggestions please do post here. Thanks

I greet you from the other side of sorrow and despair,
With a love so vast and shattered it will reach you everywhere.

Actually, Heretic's suggestion is pretty good. Hallelujah would be good, too, I'd think.

Cohen Knight, your Christmas compilation is a great idea! :D

*************

If It Be Your Will

If it be your will
That I speak no more
And my voice be still
As it was before
I will speak no more
I shall abide until
I am spoken for
If it be your will

If it be your will
That a voice be true
From this broken hill
I will sing to you
From this broken hill
All your praises they shall ring
If it be your will
To let me sing

If it be your will
If there is a choice
Let the rivers fill
Let the hills rejoice
Let your mercy spill
On all these burning hearts in hell
If it be your will
To make us well

And draw us near
And bind us tight
All your children here
In their rags of light
In our rags of light
All dressed to kill
And end this night
If it be your will

*************

Love, Susanne

Leonard has sung Silent Night on some live concerts, but there is no official recording.

I have a recording of Tom Waits doing Silent Night and then going into Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minniapolis. I think I'm going to put that on the CD.

That sounds great, Mike ~ the Tom Waits idea 8) . I'll bet that sequence is very interesting. Margaret's right. Leonard's Silent Night with Jennifer Warnes is surprisingly simple and traditional, and very lovely. It seems that we've discussed this idea before, of a Christmas compilation of Leonard's songs. Perhaps it was on the Sony Board :? . I like your compilation including others' songs, as well.

I very much doubt there is an MP3 available of this Silent Night which Leonard performed. Does anybody know if one is available?

A link to the song was on the front page of The LC Files
last year (the song was posted by Leonard's permission).
The link to the song used to be http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/silentnight.mp3

What a marvelous compilation, Mike :D !!! What a shame you can't market it :( !!! [I see you saved the best till last  in both sections.] Some truly all-time greats in your compilation, some very delightful offerings 8) . Very thoughtful, thorough, and comprehensive playlist. Some I've never heard and would love to! Now, of course, you must know that people here are going to be wanting a copy, or shall I only speak for myself  ? Absolutely willing to pay all costs.
