Hi all, Anne & I are just checking in to say we can hardly wait to see you all again. I can say that neither of us has done much about training for the walking weekend so we hope the pubs aren't too far apart!

We do have a few questions, though. We are arriving in Dublin on the morning of Sep. 10th so as to take in the glorious LC concert on Thursday night. We are hoping to get a recommendation for a hotel for that stay which will last until the next morning when we will use Ryanair to fly to Brussels for a few days in Belgium, Bruges and maybe Ghent if we have enough time. The other question that we have is whether anyone is staying in Dublin before leaving for Galway on that Thursday. We don't know whether we should fly back from Brussels on Wednesday (which, by the way, is Anne's birthday!) or wait until Thursday and fly back in time to catch a bus to get to Galway.

I also delayed our return until Sept. 26th because Christy Moore had a concert, but now the date has changed and we won't be able to see him. This affords us a couple more days in Ireland and wondering about any suggestions for us to do. We are quite familar with West Claire and would be happy to spend a few days there, but maybe we should do something else. Anne is not crazy about the idea of me driving on what is the wrong side of the road for us! Especially on those narrow crazy roads on the west coast that my brother and I scared each other to death!

Love you all-looking forward to a great time!

Joe & Anne

joe

when i'm in dublin i always stay at the inexpensive and centrally located HARDING HOTEL which is right next door to christchurch...for that night of the 10th. booking.com have a double room for £67:82. breakfast not included

next door to the HARDING is the GEORGE FREDERIC HANDEL HOTEL (the messiah oratorio had it's first public outing in a theatre that was originally on the site) ..i have stayed there once and it was excellent.. price on booking.com it is £122.85 once again breakfast not included

there is also the GRESHAM HOTEL on o'oconnell street and they have a double on that night for £103 once again breakfast not included

some folk on this forum would claim that the GRESHAM'S claim to fame lay in the fact that leonard stays here when he in dublin but you and i know it's real claim to fame is that this is where gabriel conroy and his wife retired to for the night after the the annual musical gathering at 15 ushers island in james joyce's masterpiece 'the dead' .....

and in the light of the evening's shocking revelations who could possibly read joyce's last lines as gabriel looks out of the gresham's window without a tear in their eye.....

“His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.”

and the airport bus stops outside all three hotels

btw...i'm not one to brag but did i tell you i had a drink with james joyce when i was in pula....ta ken

This is torture reading the itinerary and not being able to be there, and no it isn't Leonard keeping me away, well not exactly. I am doing a business administration course and am already taking a few days off for the Dublin concerts so unable to have more time off. Wishing everyone that is going a wonderful time.

Ken, thank you for the recommendations. The Harding wasn't available on two of the nights and I just made reservations at The Gate Hotel on Parnell Square near The Gresham-got a better deal than the other two you mentioned. So we are booked in from Sept. 10-13th.

Yes, "The Dead" is one of my favorites from Joyce and I remember the line well. We'll have to make a trip out to Sandy Cove again to Joyce's tower and museum.

Is anyone staying in Dublin on Wed. Sept. 18th?

Hi Judy & Hans-looking forward to seeing you and all the others. It will be a great trip, I am sure.

Hi All,
I'll be at the Wednesday 11th concert in Dublin before coming back to Dublin (with Barry) the following Wednesday intending to arrive in Galway early Wednesday afternoon,

Not sure if anybody is doing anything during the day or before/after the concert but I'm staying, as usual, at The Ferryman which is a 20 minute walk across the Samuel Becket bridge to the O2.
Hope to see some familiar faces around the city, at the concert and in Galway.(or even Manchester)
Cheers

Is anyone staying in Dublin on Wed. Sept. 18th?
The Finnish team (Sinikka, Pirkko, Martti, Eija & me) will arrive on Tuesday.
A dinner on Wednesday would be great.

Eija and I hope to make it to Ireland. We have flights and hotels reserved and prepaid.
However, our first grandchild is expected to be born on September 12.
This means that we will have to make a last minute decision.

Sorry to hear you can't make it, Gwen. We'll miss you.

What a dilemma, Jarkko. A nice one though. Hope you do make it to Ireland.

A fine list of people. Who's buying the first round?

OK joe thanks for the info...i've now booked my flight and will be arriving in galway at about 9pm. on the evening of wednesday 18th.

unfortunately that is also the evening that borussia dortmund play napoli in the champions league so could you possibly suggest a pub in galway for that evening that sells good guinness stays open late and won't have football beaming down from every wall...

and i'm presuming the same rule applies that was adopted on the last two walks....all talk of football is strictly prohibited for the duration of the whole weekend....ta ken

What a great group of people!
So glad to see that Hazel Morris is going, too!
You folks are going to have such a great time.
I hope your new grandchild holds off JUST a TAD, Jarkko and Eija :D !
