Lee Hazlewood and a mystery song attributed to Leonard

Post by Bartleby »

I have a CD by Lee Hazlewood called “Love and other Crimes” which contains a lovely song entitled “Your Sweet Love” which is attributed to Leonard. The song is not in Jarkko's wonderful, prodigious list of covers. The lyrics are as follows:
Strangers’ arms reach out to me
‘Cos they know what’s so lonely
Then my mind goes back to you
Your sweet love sees me through
Your sweet love sees me through

Strangers’ eyes see through me
They know I need company
Then I stop and think of you
Your sweet love sees me through
Your sweet love sees me through

Strangers take my lonely hands
Tell me that they understand
I tend (?) to them, I think of you
Your sweet love sees me through
Your sweet love sees me through
Does anybody know anything about the song? Is the attribution correct or not? In the meantime Jarkko is looking into it.

Hi Bartleby ~

I'm wondering if it's maybe a song that Lee Hazlewood wrote and dedicated to Leonard, as the inspiration for it... or does it actually say "Written by Leonard Cohen"?

Bartleby sent me a scan of the song list and indeed this song is credited to Leonard (=he is the author)!!
Looks like we have missed the song totally!

It is wonderful when we can find a new song. It is especially great when it is performed by the great Lee Hazlewood. I am still saddened by his recent death.

Leonard emailed that he has not written the song in question.

Ahhh. "L.Cohen" makes a huge difference right off the top. Larry Cohen or whatever. The lyrics didn't 'feel' like Leonard's.

The Lee Hazlewood fansite attributes "Your Sweet Love" to Lee Hazlewood.

Obviously, a memory lapse of the typist who was listening to "Famous Blue Raincoat" at the time.
