jeff buckley - Hallelujah

Post by Psychofishy »

i'm sure someone posted about this already.. somewhere..
but.. i just wanna do it again

i just bought the cd "Jeff Buckley - Grace" (just because hallelujah was on it)
and.. i must say. .. it was worth every penny ! (5euro)
jeff buckley sings hallelujah so damn beautiful... it's SO different like the one from cohen.. and also so different than the rest of the cd "grace"

but.. i think everybody should listen to it.. just.. to have heard it..
it's awesome

Dear Psychofishy,
I agree wholeheartedly with you: "awesome" is the right word to describe Jeff Buckley's interpretation of one of Leonard's finest songs.
The other cover version on the album, "Lilac Wine", is pretty awesome too, don't you agree?
Yours,
Andrew.

GLZ radio station keeps this lovely ritual for a few years now: they play "Hallelujah" every saturday night , just before midnight news. usualy they prefer palying cale's version and for the past few months they only play Buckley's version (which is better , in my humble opinion).
So , if you wish to hear it : on sturday night at 22:55 central european time, use this link http://www.glz.co.il (yes , i know it 's all greek to you , but in fact it's hebrew :-) ). click on the second link attached to the blue square , and enjoy.

my mistake was in my first post :GLZ play it just before the 2:00 o'clock news , so according to CET it should be 00:55.
And you're welcome.

hey great, an other person from holland  I've just bought Grace too, because of the same reason as you: just because hallelujah was on it. but the other songs are beautifully as well, if not to say: even more beautiful. my fave ones are: grace (really awesome!), hallelujah, eternal life and dream brother

'Cause they're waiting for you
like I waited for mine
and nobody ever came...

awesome

I also have the dvd and the cd mystery white boy.
the dvd is very cool

I always thought that Jeff Buckley added lyrics to hallelujah, but that's not true, I guess??

did LC written the following: "I've seen this room and I've walked this floor. I used to live alone before I knew ya" or "well maybe there's a god above, but all I ever learned from love was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya"? these lyrics are not in my version of hallelujah :?
Outside I sit on the stone steps
With nothing much to do
Forlorn and exhausted, baby
By the absence of you

Wildrose,

Leonard himself added extra verses to Hallelujah after the official studio recording and has performed the longer version in live concerts since then. Lots of his songs are altered or added to in this way which makes each live concert a little bit unique.

For what it's worth, our national youth radio broadcaster (though some years ago now) listed this version of Hallelujah as one of their top 50 covers of all time! 8) http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/jfiles/files/s234594.htm

I would have to agree with this assessment - I think it is almost unsurpassable! Having said this, I think I will always love LC's live performance of this song in 1988 (as seen on the BBC video "Songs From The Life Of LC") as he performs it with such express emotion!

Cheers :)

newest cover of Hallelujah

Post by Adrian »

Canadian singer-songwriter Allison Crowe, (whom I manage), has just recorded a version of Hallelujah, live-off-the-floor in one take. (She records most everything that way.) The track will be released on an EP, Tidings, later this month.

Before then, you can preview the track @:

I've mentioned this in the Hallelujah thread, but it seems to have a home here, too. I hope you will find this particular passionate interpretation to be a worthy listen.

peace and cheers, Adrian

Hallelujah (live from the Bataclan):Jeff Buckley

This seems to be the last verse in this version - I have no idea whether it was added by Jeff Buckely or by LC himself in one of his live renditions, but somehow it doesn't have the "LC feel":

...........
It's not what you're told
It's not her face
It's not his touch
In the room you both share
When he's gone when he left
When your time and your memory fills your dreams
When you're honest and together
Together no more
No more
Hallelujah, until you're nothing
Hallelujah, baby, until she's everywhere
Hallelujah, until together you are somewhere I'd lost
Hallelujah, Hallelujah.

That doesn't sound like Leonard to me.
