I have a friend in New York who is a huge Cohen fan visiting Montreal next week.

Are there any resources on the web that summarizes "Cohen's Montreal" so he can visit some of the sites in person?

I would suggest going to see the Lady of the Harbour statue. Photos and official name of the statue and church can be found on this link. Have fun!

Please don't use the 'T' word right now. It makes people nervous.

Leonard's Montreal - a walking tour

Leonard's present home - walk north on Boulevard St. Laurent - about 20 minutes north of Sherbrooke - there is a small park on the right called Parc Portugale, enclosed by four streets, St. Laurent, Vallieres, Marie-Anne and St. Dominique. On the corner of Vallieres and St. Dominique is a red brick building - Leonard's house is the greyish 3 story attached to the red brick building (previously the Zen Centre).

Leonard's childhood home is at 599 Belmont Avenue. There are a hundred ways to walk there from downtown so check Google Maps for directions. It's about a good hour's plus hilly walk from downtown. Make sure to continue to the lookout at Mont Royal for a wonderful view of the city.

Cafe Helios (where Suzanne took Leonard for tea and oranges) is at 119 Rue de la Commune Ouest (West).

Our Lady Of The Harbour. Start from Cafe Helios and walk eastward (water on your right) about 0.5 miles, keep looking upward to your left.

Coincidentally, we just returned from a short (first) visit to Montreal. It is a lovely city, you will certainly like it.

Regarding the sights already mentioned, we saw them all except the "tea and oranges" cafe. If you visit LC's present home, consider lunch at nearby Schwartz's where you can get exquisite smoked meat sandwiched (3895 Boul Saint Laurent). Close by is also a very fine (and likely expensive) steak house called Moishe's (3961 Boul Saint Laurent); we did not dine there due to time (and dollar) constraints, it is a old establishment that LC occasionally enjoys visiting.

If you visit his boyhood home, be sure to see the park next door. This is the park that LC referenced in his Prince Asturias acceptance speech where he found a tutor to give him guitar lessons.

As for other areas of interest, there are a number of nice pubs and restaurants downtown in the Crescent St area. The botanical gardens, located near the former Olympic site, are exquisite if you are into that. Montreal has a great Metro, and other than during rush hours, is quite driveable. Would recommend Great Western which is conveniently located downtown, that is where we stayed.

We were lucky enough to find a Montreal forum member who very graciously took the better part of a day to show us around. Most of the above is based on her expertise and knowledge about Montreal, hopefully it will help you enjoy your visit as much as we did ours.
