Special Treat - Tour of Ulysses Night Town
Friends, good evening from Dublin on this beautiful summer solstice, the longest day of the year. It will be light here until 11pm.
"There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in."
I'm not sure how much light there was on the night of June 16th 1904 when Leopold Bloom perambulated around Dublin in James Joyce's Ulysses. Chapter 15 of the novel takes place in Night Town - the episode opens at midnight by the entrance to the red light district of Dublin, at that time. The area was known locally as the Monto; rumour has it that it was the biggest red light district in Europe.
The Circe episode sees Stephen and Lynch there in Night Town with Bloom in pursuit of them.
Des Gunning, Joycean scholar, will conduct a tour of the area for your delectation on Saturday morning, 9th August from 10.30-12.30pm. This is a special treat for Event participants but there is a limit to the numbers he can accommodate - 20 in total.
If you are interested please email me: paula@leonardcoheneventdublin.com.
There are many different tours in Dublin and we will post links to them for you. This Tour of Night Town is a once-off for the Leonard Cohen Dublin Event.
All good things.

and would you believe a madam running one of the brothels in Joyce's Dublin nighttown was a certain Mrs Cohen....I wonder if any of the recent horde of biographers have investigated the possibility of a family connection...: - )))))

This is great news, Paula. Des is not only a brilliant scholar of all things Joycean, he is a thoroughly entertaining and affable fellow. I really enjoyed his recitation from Finnegan's Wake that afternoon at the Strawberry Fields. How do Dubliners celebrate a sunny afternoon in July? Why, getting together to read Joyce aloud, of course -- with the music and the craic available at the pub nearby.
There's a craic in everything.

Re: Special Treat - Tour of Ulysses Night Town
sometimes it can be best to live in ignorance...after years of the thinking the furry glen in the traditional song ' monto' sung by the mighty luke kelly referred to this part of a lady's anatomy ......
i now find the furry glen is in fact a beautiful section of dublin's phoenix park...
where ignorance is bliss 'tis folly to be wise

Re: Special Treat - Tour of Ulysses Night Town
I just got back from a holiday to see this.
Is there possibly the chance of accommodating one more on this tour?

Re: Special Treat - Tour of Ulysses Night Town
it's taken me nearly two months on and off but i finally finished chapter 15 circe of ulysses last night...little did i know when i started reading it lying on a beach in greece that it's not only the longest chapter in the book but also considered one of the most 'challenging'...and boy was it 'challenging'....i take some consolation from looking at susan sontag's notations on her copy of joyces' 'finnegan's wake' (top photo) and a page from the same book of a los angeles book club member .. .notating is something you can't do reading on a samsung tablet....thank god...now looking forward to our night town walk...ta ken
