Hi everybody,
I hope you are all well.
Helena and I went to see Anjani and her band on Friday night playing in Tripod.
She was excellent. Anjani played all her Blue Alert tunes and included Smokey Life and Gypsy Life into her set. Both done to perfection with her wonderful chocolate voice and band.
Anjani looked great and seemed to enjoy herself after a little nervous start. It was a perfect venue small and intimate, a perfect place to chill out on a Friday night with Leonard's words and Anjani's voice and music. She also performed the Ties that Bind from her first album. Highlights for me were, Blue Alert, Thanks for the Dance and Nightingale as well as Smokey Life and Gypsy Wife.
Altogether a great night and a pleasure to have Anjani entertain us. She bantered well with the small crowd and seemed genuine in her enjoyment of the evening also.
Thanks Anjani.
All the best
Kieron

Am I guessing or the journalist did mixed up Closing Time with Anjani's Never Got to Love You [which itself *is* Closing Time spin-off]?
She's more than just a famous man's girlfriend

But Anjani Thomas, Cohen's partner and sometime collaborator, could probably tell you about the drawbacks, too. How about being asked during a performance if you enjoy "pillow talk with Leonard?"
And that's just one of the questions that this talented Hawaiian-born singer had to contend with at a sparsely-attended Tripod. Others were on the subject of Cohen's legendary aversion to touring.
But Anjani took it all in her stride, as playful a character between songs as she is elegant during them.
And while few people seemed to be familiar with her material, the songs shone through, thanks to her captivating vocals and her talented jazz-leaning band, who delivered a beautifully precise accompaniment.
There was plenty for the Cohen aficionado to enjoy, too, as she performed a handful of his more embryonic songs - uncompleted, unnamed and never released by him, but re-jigged and put to music by her.
She also offered her take of one of Cohen's loveliest songs, 'Closing Time'.
Her own material shared some of her partner's lyrical deftness - and sense of humour. 'The Mist' was especially beautiful, an ideal showcase for her remarkable range.
Anjani is not the sort of artist to get the pulse racing, but that was hardly the point tonight.

Re: Anjani in Tripod, Dublin.
He definitely called the wrong song when he said "Closing Time." I don't like the nature of questions she got, but I know she handled them with grace and class.
I like his headline, though ... and his other comments about Anjani . I love that very striking photo of her... she appears to be looking back at her band as she's singing .

Re: Anjani in Tripod, Dublin.
The Independent is a rag, as are most of the papers in the Bean Baron's Irish stable so don't take anything in that publication too seriously.
I wasn't at the POD but am intrigued by references to questions. Kieron was there and might be able to answer on that. Was there a Q&A that led to the pillow talk question? Was it a humorous throwaway from someone in the audience? Did it happen (not everything reported in the Indo happens)?
If Anjani had a Q&A session then she's going to have to expect the questions to relate to Leonard. He wrote the songs.
Kieron, you might clarify for us, please.

Re: Anjani in Tripod, Dublin.
Hi Red,
Firstly I agree wholeheartedly on the Indo.
There was no Q&A, the comment from the audience came as part of Anjani's attempt interact with them. The "Pillow" comment made me cringe, most of those present did not know her work and were drawn there by her relationship and the "Leonard Cohen presents" tagline on the promo material. I thought that the audience overall were fine except for a few who interjected with silly comments, the worst was one "fan" who interupted her encore after Anjani performed "Nightingale". He approached the stage and told her he had to go and could he have her autograph. Anjani comes halfway around the world to perform brilliantly for us and this twit interupts her because he has to catch a bus!!! Very rude. Most of the banter did involve Leonard as you would have expected. I think she enjoys a certain amount of it. Queries were made about wether he would tour again, the usual maybe answer was delivered. Pretty much Jarkko style
Otherwise a wonderful night, she did not perform Closing Time, Lizzy is probably right in her theory on "Never got to..."

Re: Anjani in Tripod, Dublin.
Hi Kieron, I wondered how you got on at the Tripod. Thanks for the report. She didn't sing Thanks for the Dance in Mullingar (my favourite). Sounds like you had a good evening.
Re: Anjani in Tripod, Dublin.
Hi Kieron,
Thanks also for the report. It is surprising to me that she didn't perform "Thanks For The Dance" in Mullingar as I think it is her most accomplished song.
I still can't believe that I haven't had the opportunity to see her perform. I hope that a tour brings her to the midwest one of these days.
