The Isle of Wight Festival & Tower of Song DVDs

Post by YankovicGretzky » Fri Dec 05, 2003 1:22 am

Have any of you purchased and watched The Isle of Wight Festival on DVD? Is it any good? How about Tower of Song: An Epic Story of Canada and It's Music, which is also available on DVD? They both feature Leonard Cohen. I'm thinking of buying them both from I already have Ladies and Gentleman Mr. Leonard Cohen. It's Awesome!

I watched the Isle of Wight tape on VHS. I enjoyed it. It was a good look at the underbelly of that type of event. I especially liked Kris Kristopherson's "I think they're gonna shoot us" remark about the crowd before bolting from the stage.

"Isle of Wight" DVD (and the original movie) includes only "Suzanne"
(to be exact: part of it) by Leonard. However, the DVD is certainly worth buying.
I would pass the "Tower of Song DVD" (I have it in my collection so I
know what I'm speaking about): in spite of the name it deals with
Cohen VERY shortly; it's a survey of Canadian artists and has only half
a minute for each.

There are two more DVDs that should be mentioned here: "Prince's Gala Trust 1988"
featuring "Tower of Song" and the new Giants - Jools Holland with splendid 1993
live rendition of "Dance me..." (both with Leonard, Perla, Julie & band)

Please note that these two are European releases which means that
North Americans need a multisystem, region-free DVD player.

Its a relatively short clip with Leonard in at the Isle of Wight, but worth the cost of the dvd. I do like the whole of the film. What I find particuarly frustrating is that somewhere in the vaults there sits the whole film of Leonard's concert at the Isle of Wight. Other groups, such as the Who, have had their concerts from the festival released. Why not Leonard. It would surely sell enough world wide to make enough money. Come on, whoever it is that makes these decisions, get your brains in gear!

I support your sentiments on this, Glyn! 8)

I just don't know what criteria they use for such decisions - I'd guess though, that it would be likely to be a commercial viability 'bottom line', perhaps combined with (or a resultant of) the quality of the film footage & sound. I'm sure a number of us, including me, would purchase a copy irrespective of this, but maybe not enough of us to make a difference to whoever would make that decision! :(

Cheers :)
