We could not make Madrid this time around, although we were very tempted to try. We were there in 2009. I have to say it was a fantastic concert and was as good as any I have seen. So I am not surprised that those attending last night experienced another great show. The "madrileños" are a really enthusiastic audience and I am sure the atmosphere must have been fantastic. From the 2009 concert the highlight was "The Partisan". I will never forget the ovation that followed it. Anyway, sorry to hijack the 2012 concert report thread, but reading about it brought back great memories from 2009. I hope everyone who attended had a brilliant night, We were there with you in spirit!

Regards,

Scott & Helen.

Hello to everybody!
This is my first post in the forum, (excuse me for my poor english), altough i've read it a lot for getting information and chronicles from this beautiful Old Ideas Tour.
I was last night in Madrid show and i have to say that, in my opinion, it was a SUPERB show, full of emotion, intensity and beauty.
I made a few videos, and i would like to share them as thanks to the forum for all the usefull information that i get from here (set lists, news, dates, chronicles...).

I was at second floor in the middle of the pitch, so the image is not as good as other recordings because i was a little far from scene but eventough, i think the sound is quite acceptable. Enjoy it!

Going Home
My favourite Old Ideas song!

CONCERT REPORT: Madrid, October 5 2012

Madrid, October 5 2012

No words. No way to describe it. The best Cohen concert ever for me (I've been to 3: 1993, 2009 and yesterday night). 4 hours length, 33 songs. Everything impeccable. The humblest man in the world singing just opposite me (I was just facing him, 2nd row and first row during the second part (the one at the first row left so I changed seat facing him at the centre of the stage) and facing him standing just in the centre opposite him during the encores).
During the encores he was laughing a lot and talking and joking a lot with the public. He felt so good he did not want to go: three encores two songs each!

AMAZING! During the encores we threw to the stage a lot of letters for him and a lot of white carnations. After finishing the song he walked the whole stage kneeling and picking up every single flower and letter, gathered them all between his arms and made us a bow and went out the stage for a minute to keep them all at a safe place!

I myself and about ten more waited for him till he went out inside the car (02:00 in the morning!) We waved him goodbye and he pulled down the car window to shake our hands (the car was running very slowly.

AMAZING! He begged the driver to stop the car and the driver told him he had orders not to stop (the car was moving slowly for him to shake hands from inside). So Leonard told us from inside the car: "You've seen I've tried to stop but my chauffer is too hard. I'm sorry." Then, the car speeded and vanished down the street. The dream was over.

MAGIC IS ALIVE. LEONARD COHEN IS ALIVE!
-Madrid 1993 (standing up face to face to Leonard, leaning my arms upon the stage (no cams, no security line), my hands touched Cohen's feet!) (talked to Cohen for 20 minutes after concert!!!)
-Lisbon 2009 (1st row!!)
-Madrid 2012 (1st row centred facing Leonard!!)
-FOREVER

To Take Your Hat!: Leonard Cohen Stands To Madrid

lainformacion.com

Saturday, 06/10/12 - 01:16

Stand with cheers of "bravo" protruding from thousands of applause, the audience excited Madrid congratulated Leonard Cohen
The legend of 78 years offered a nearly four-hour concert that was to remove his hat, as did the singer with her musicians

To take your hat!: Leonard Cohen stands to Madrid

The Palacio de Deportes in Madrid fell to Leonard Cohen, who thanked the "warm welcome" of the thousands of "friends" who attended this concert no less than thirty mythical and recent songs of his career.

After opening fire with their classic theme: "Dance Me to the End of Love," the Canadian told his fans: "I do not know when I will return, so I will give everything." And, he did!

Leonard Cohen gave everything and had his musicians delight the senses of the spectators who were cheering authentic, especially the guitar maestro Javier Mas, an Aragonese based in Barcelona.

With a great sense of gratitude, Cohen publicly acknowledged that its present tour is accompanied by musicians and singers first and took off his hat during and after the brief actions they performed in full stage.

The concert was divided into two parts. In the first round, Cohen performed songs quieter but as flagship as "Bird on the Wire", "Everybody Knows," "Sisters of Mercy," "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye" or "In My Secret Life".

In the second part, Cohen opted to introduce topics less slow as "Suzanne," "Night Comes On", "Democracy" and "The Gypsy's Wife," among others, and give the opportunity to have the chorus of three soloists put hairs edge with his renditions of two songs.

Playing a harp and a guitar, the two singers The Webb Sisters performed "Coming Back to You" while Sharon Robinson, Cohen touring companion, ruled with absolute mastery with the song "Alexandra Leaving".

Rather than sing, Leonard Cohen prayed with his hoarse voice flat and songs whose lyrics are poems as spiritual as "Amen", "Waiting for the Miracle" and "Hallelujah" among others.

Encorbado, shrunken, self-absorbed and kneeling, Cohen sang on a large Persian rug that dominated the stage.

In particular, Cohen recognized the talent of the band led by Roscoe Beck who accompanied him on his tour, especially the violinist Alexandru Moldovan Bublitchi and Spanish guitarist Javier Mas.

These two musicians showed the public what art is capitalized when they made themselves and even when interpreted freely during a topic like "The Gypsy's Life".

With eyes closed and with great respect for these two geniuses, Cohen knelt and raised his hat in the countless times when the more as Bublitchi contributed generously and gracefully to Madrid concert is remembered as memorable.

It was a night of black men, Cohen dressed-as-usual black tailored suit and his musicians did the same while the audience listened and applauded between songs until he stood on "I'm Your Man" .

With the romantic theme, the singer showed that not only was the perfect man for a woman but also is spiritual, serene, wise, with a sense of gratitude to foreign talent and serious, very serious.

An artist, in short, has unwittingly set tonight and on stage what is the essence of art, of authenticity, of the genuineness of that imprints and is almost nothing! unrepeatable.

Does anybody know why LC did not sing Gypsy Wife? I heard only (amazing & superb) The Guests, and his voice sound little too tired there, down under the ground... :) Maybe he was needing a sudden rest for his voice? I see him on stage with the guitar in the clip...
Second Set:
Tower of song
Suzanne
Night comes on
The Guests
Heart with no companion
The gypsy’s wife (sang by Sharon Robinson and the Webb Sisters)
The partisan
Democracy
Coming back to you (Webb Sisters)
Alexandra leaving (Sharon Robinson)
I’m your man
Hallelujah
Take this waltz

I was wondering also Tom - I noticed - and then wondered if I had missed that he wasn't singing this song and went back and checked the last few concerts.
But this was a "first?"
Maybe they have a Plan B for the song - so that it can be used if Leonard wants to lay out a bit.
Seems like the arrangement would have to have been planned maybe - or rehearsed that way
But - I don't know - I noticed and wondered

If my memory serves me correctly, Charlie sang the first part of Gypsy Wife in Barcelona then Leonard took over. Sounds to me as if they have been working on a new arrangement for the song.
