Wybe is our new moderator ! (stopping the spam)
Would it be worthwhile requiring the first 10 or so posts by an individual to be approved by a moderator rather than having so many porn links posted and then deleted? (Particularly frogs today)

Re: Stopping the Spam
I was just thinking of starting the same thread - thanks, 'John the Shorts'.
We could also have that... what is it called... anti-spam bot question, where each person that registeres has to type in certain letters and numbers on the screen to complete the registration. Or is that already here? I forgot.

***This would be possible if we had full-time, professional moderators who are on the duty 24 hours a day and have not anything else to do than to monitor the Forum. Otherwise it is not realistic. Or would you John be willing to be the one who checks the contents of messages posted by new members, counts their messages until they reach ten approved posts, and so on... This would mean reading and handling thousands of messages every week.Would it be worthwhile requiring the first 10 or so posts by an individual to be approved by a moderator rather than having so many porn links posted and then deleted? The only way to get totally rid of spammers is to stop taking new members. That would not be so nice, there are old Cohen fans out there who only now find us!
All members can help in keeping the forum clean by flagging the spam messages (go to the spam message and hit on the red proclamation mark on the right - the first moderator who logs in will delete the spammer).
We may increase the number of moderators. Already now the spam messages are deleted and the spammer's account closed etc. within reasonable time, sometimes even in minutes.
This is also a good thread to introduce our new moderator, Wijbe Lageveen (aka Wybe) from Holland. He volunteered to join the moderator group and is getting the moderator rights today! Welcome to the team, Wijbe!

Re: Stopping the Spam
Congratulations Wijbe! Justly deserved!
Best regards,
Mary
PS Spam can be annoying, (I do the alert thingee) but on the whole it is very quickly and efficiently dealt with by the moderators - thank you. Maybe the porno spams are attracted to this forum because our man has an affinity for the word 'naked' .

I know what Jarkko is talking about. It's not easy to be on your guard all the time. It's enough, and we are thankful for that, that the threads mentioned in here gets deleted just as soon as a mod comes on line.

First of all welcome Wybe/Wijbe I'm sure you'll do a great job as a moderator.
Jarkko - I wasn't having a go at the current moderators who I know have tremendous amount of work and do it well (I only tend to lurk these days and not post too much) I would certainly consider such a post but cannot, currently, make the time commitment due to work - however I shall bear the offer in mind should my circumstances change

Re: Wybe is our new moderator ! (stopping the spam)
Is there a way to flag up the offending posts without having to open them first to click on the exclamation mark ?
As it is there are full colour images coming up on the screen where there used to be just website links

Re: Wybe is our new moderator ! (stopping the spam)
Excellent question, Margaret. The spammers are openly brazen and boast about deliberately timing their posts when the European time zone Mods are sleeping. I quite often see these spam posts in the evening, Pacific Time and wish I could just flag them.margaret wrote:Is there a way to flag up the offending posts without having to open them first to click on the exclamation mark ?

I haven't been a moderator long just yet, but I don't think you can flag a post without opening it... I will ask Jarkko about this, but I doubt he will tell you something different...
The flagging by members is a VERY helpful thing to easily spot spammers, so please keep on doing this, although I can understand your concern about opening such rubbish posts! This afternoon, my 8 year old son was sitting next to me on the couch watching tv, while I was on the forum with my laptop. I clicked on a really "colourful" spam post to delete it and was really happy that my son didn't see this...
By flagging a post, it turns the thread red for moderators which attracts the attention immediately and the first thing we do when we go on the forum, is check for "red" threads so we can delete those.
So -despite the shocking content- here's another plea to keep flagging spam. The sooner we can delete this, the better!
Take care,
Maarten
