Mayor's Parade starts at noon at Piccadilly (Park Lane side) -- look for the Carlow banner, (Section F. # 23)
Parade ends at Whitehall Place.
We had a few Cohenites join us at the Parade in London on Sunday last and later in the famous "The Spice of Life" pub at Cambridge Circus, Soho.
I have a few pictures,
have to figure out how to put them up ;-) .

Ah, but I was there. Thanks again for the wonderful poem and remembrances Frances, (and CarlowMike, Frank, Trish, Bernard) how I hated to leave and return to NJ while you guys were still having so much fun! And unfortunately I won't be able to join you in Sligo this year; I was there in '81 just a few years too early. What a memorable day at the Chelsea ceremony then Madison Square Garden then up all night with the Irish contingent. It will be remembered always and I've met friends which I'll always treasure. Have been on the forum since 95 or 96; just lost my original login name and rejoined last year. Do wish you'd join facebook too Mike-lots of us are there as well and have continued to meet many more Cohenites. Sligo is the one concert I want to go to darn it all for lack of money. You are doing a wonderful job here Mike. Hats (or fedora) off to ya, Lorraine
Please note that I just received email claiming to be from "maltmom" - in which "Lorraine" states that she is stuck in London and seeking financial assistance (£1,873.00 :!: ).
I believe the email is NOT from Lorraine and is a scam ...I am posting this here in case any other Forum members have been contacted ---
Lorraine is a member of Facebook so if any member is in contact with her via Facebook they might inform her that her name and email address is being abused in this fashion.
I am not sure how such a "scam" operates but there is one letter missing in the "reply address" that differs from "maltmom's" genuine email address. :?

Note added one hour after the above posting:
Lorraine contacted me a few minutes ago ...not only did the scammers get hold of her address list they have also changed the password to her email account, she is unable to contact her friends to warn them of this scam.

I'd like to thank Carlowmike for letting you all know I was hacked/scammed the other day. Actually twice in 24 hours.

I have had my gmail account that is associated with facebook compromised twice in the last two days by someone I do not know. That person was able to send out an email to all of my contacts asking for money, claiming that I was in London in dire need. Apparently the same email must have been sent to my facebook contacts, many of whom are forum members, and for that I deeply apologize, as my Facebook account has been temporarily shut down due to spam contact. I have filed a complaint with several organizations to help rectify this. I believe my email account is now secure as I now have a 2step verification. I still cannot access Facebook however.

Thanks all for your concern - I've just chatted with Mick and he tells me he's received some pm's. Much appreciated. lorraine

Shock as Sligo's Lissadell seized by State
Sligo people will be shocked to learn this weekend that Sligo's Lissadell House and Estate has been taken over by the Government and is to be transformed into a military camp. The historic building and lands immortalised in Yeats' poetry, was seized yesterday by the government under little known, or used, legislation, The Private Property Sequestration Act,1905.

The entire seizure process was blanketed under the 1963 Official Secrets Act and news only emerged late last night as the Irish Army moved in an took control of the lands. They have been working through the night to erect a security fence which will encompass the entire 410 acres.
Information is still sketchy, but a highly placed source has confirmed to SligoToday.ie that the Minister of Justice and Defence ordered the controversial move as part of stringent measures over the country's finances.
In a desperate move to raise much needed finance for the State, the military were moved just a few miles from Finner Camp in nearby Bundoran, Co Donegal which has been sensationally sold to a consortium of business people and foreign banks for over €180m and will be transformed into a Concert venue and casino park under the new Gambling Act. Following the success of the Leonard Cohen concerts in 2010 it has been established that Mr Cohen has been invited back to perform the offical opening concerts in April 2012.
Already protesters from the locality are starting to arrive at Lissadell and gardaí have drafted in extra personnel as more protesters are expected to arrive as the news of the seizure spreads. It is understood the both the garda and army public order squads, already fully equipped and in protective uniforms are on standby in the vicinity.
The, now previous, owners of Lissadell were this morning unavailable for comment but are expected to make a full statement at a press conference later today.
Peter and Joanne Sheridan were walking with their two dogs yesterday evening near Lissadell beach when the army arrived, "They told us to vacate the land immediately, although they were courteous they left us in no doubt that this was not a request," said Mr Sheridan. "It's hard to argue with tough looking guys with guns,".

Ah, Leslie! Indeed Mick's little "fable" about Lissadell is most certainly an April Fools, but I would not discount any information regarding April 2012. Think back to April of 2010 and how several people thought that was an April Fools Day joke! Ireland....here we come again!! :D

Oh my....my head is spinning! I certainly hope James doesn't turn 60 "this" year because I doubt I can make it to Ireland in the next few days. However, my plans are already in place for April 2012, and it would be lovely to be picked up by you, my darlin' Mick! I'm sure Leslie would appreciate that also!

Any hints as to where? Dublin? Sligo? or, well, you guys don't know this, but I had a dream a couple of months ago with LC and Robert Kory and several band members, and I was enroute to Galway on a private plane!

Wherever it might be, I will be there! :D

on-going saga :!: .....
Lissadell owners in Supreme Court appeal

The owners of Lissadell house in Sligo are to appeal to the Supreme Court against a High Court ruling that local people are entitled to use rights of way on the estate. Senior counsel Eddie Walsh and his wife Constance Cassidy bought the house for €4 million seven years ago.
After a six month court case, Mr Justice Bryan McMahon ruled that members of the public had used four routes across the estate ‘‘since the early 1950s at least’’.

Following the High Court ruling, the gates to the main avenues at Lissadell were opened, but Walsh told The Sunday Business Post: ‘‘If the [High Court] decision were to be upheld, Lissadell could not be operated either as a family home or as a tourist facility, for reasons of security, insurance and maintenance.

‘‘The nature of the public rights of way found by the judge also raise fundamental issues as to how they will actually work. For example, we have restored 19th century cobbled drains on the avenues, avenues which are too narrow for two cars to pass each other without driving over these historic drains.

‘‘We have also landscaped the grass verges, but the avenues were not, of course, built for the traffic of today. Cars driving over these drains, and over the grass verges will commit trespass, but realistically, how can this be policed? I believe we are compelled to appeal."

The couple have spent more than €7 million renovating the estate. The works included the planting of 14,000 oak trees and 200 heritage apple trees, renovation of the alpine and kitchen gardens, restoration of woodlands, rebuilding of a reservoir, the erection of one kilometre of stone walls and reconstruction of estate buildings, including the coach house and riding arena.

One local supporter of the owners of Lissadell told The Sunday Business Post: ‘‘The evidence to the court of local access ‘within living memory’ began during the period of the ward ship of Sir Michael Gore-Booth from 1944 to 1987, when the estate was in serious decline.

‘‘The documentary evidence before the court, from the office of wards of court and the council’s own files, was that the council had refused to spend money on the avenues at Lissadell in case they became liable for maintenance. But the judge said that, because Bord Fáilte had given some funding in the 1950s and later, this was effectively the same as local authority road funding."

Costs of the legal action, including the six-month trial, are likely to be up to €6 million, though this figure will increase with the appeal.

It’s understood that discussions about a series of big name concerts in the grounds of Lissadell next year, following last summer’s successful two-night concert by Leonard Cohen, have now been called off.
