Leonard Cohen Celebrated his 76th Birthday on Stage in Marseille

Due to back injury, the Montreal poet had to postpone his European tour in March to six months. Headwear and dark suits were in the spotlight for the artist, his six musicians and two singers in a staged sober and elegant.

Bouncing and charming, he continued with unfailing vitality its biggest titles, including "Suzanne" in which part of the audience lit candles, "Everybody Knows", "I'm Your Man" or "Hallelujah" by air.

Surrounded by musicians, including virtuoso Javier Mas at the 12-string guitar and Dino Soldo Spanish saxophone, the septuagenarian with a warm voice, mesmerized his audience and took turns waltzing in Vienna, making love in New York, the war on Germans, or the Berlin Wall.

"I had so much to tell you tonight," he told the audience.

For it is by storyteller he shelled his repertoire as many slices of life, whispering his love of love, women, bodies, melancholy, loneliness or rejection of the system.

It's probably better to share this musical journey as two giant screens were installed on each side of the stage on which his words were translated into French.

After recall to the stage of more than 40 minutes and mischievously apologizing for having kept audiences so late, he joined his hands, slightly tilted and left the scene as it happened, skipping.

Leonard Cohen will perform at Towers (September 23), Lille (September 25) followed by Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovenia and Slovakia, where he completed his world tour after giving over 220 concerts sold out, since his return on stage May 2008.

Back from Strasbourg and Marseille after two great shows and a very emotional time, I want to thank everybody who organised the meeting. Harald thanks for the nametags, we'll treasure them as much as the once from Barcelona and thanks to Sandrine for getting the beautiful flowers and to Metrixell and the Barcelona teams for the candles which looked so great during Suzanne. Thanks to Judy and daveeliver for organising the place and thanks to everybody else for being there for a wonderful afternoon. It was a difficult concert for me because it was the last one for me for this tour. So I was in tears a lot of times and still am thinking about it.
Greetings from Berlin which is rainy and grey, Christel

Back home (Malta) from Marseille where I experienced my first ever LC in concert! Simply astounding! Constantly day dreaming about this concert! Am almost dreading the fact that I saw him live - doubt I will ever go to any concert as good as this!

And a big thanks to Christel for helping me and my girlfriend in our quest to attend this concert! It was going to be difficult but Christel made it easy for us! Big big thanks! :)

PS: those candles and flowers looked really nice! :)

Thanks Albert! Terrific captures.

Another stunning performance by Javier Mas in "Who By Fire" !! And Roscoe Beck's awesome bass solo at the end ...!! :D :D
Thanks for capturing!!

A very happy and animated "Closing Time" !! This birthday boy looks happy. :D :D
And I love what looks like a spontaneous playful bit with Dino (at 4:00) -
"but the Boss don't like these dizzy heights, we're busted in the blinding lights" !!
Just remarkable - that he even wrote all those words - let alone sings them!! Every show!
"I had so much to tell you ..." :D :D :D

At the end of Closing Time, after "... I'd like to keep on drinking with all of you", Leonard said: "but the bartender is wiping down the bar/ & stacking up the chairs/ they ought to hand the night a ticket/ for speeding it's a crime/ I have so much to tell you/ but now it's closing time"; these beautiful lyrics are from the song Never Got To Love You (as someone mentioned earlier in the thread). At Marseilles, Leonard gave a partial quote of the "wiping down the bar" verse, & a complete quote of the "hand the night a ticket" verse; in Lille, he quoted both verses entirely (although he switched what was stacked & what was wiped down (I think because of a mistake in the first line, & then some quick thinking to cover it - lol!! - beautiful!! - I love it!!); in Lille, he said:

"I'd like to keep drinking with you all night, but. . .they're wiping down the chairs/ stacking up the bar/ I never got to tell you/ how beautiful you are/ they ought to hand the night a ticket/ for speeding its a crime/ I had so much to tell you/ but now it's closing time"

I'm wondering if Leonard also recited these verses in Tours (or anywhere else?), (I was in Marseilles & Lille, but not in Tours) - anyone know?

Thank You Mr. Leonard Cohen for a gorgeous, brilliant, ecstatic concert, and for treating us to those wonderful lyrics, which you had kept hidden away, until Anjani fished them out, & now you so generously, eloquently, & masterfully, gave us that gift of recitation with your own beautiful, deep, mesmerizing, incomparably expressive voice!!! YOU ARE THE ONE, LEONARD COHEN, ON THE HIGHEST RUNG!!!

And it was a great joy to meet everyone at the cafe & to celebrate Leonard's very auspicious birthday together!! Thank you to all the generous organizers, & to all the wonderful, irreplacable forum friends, for being there - your presence made the whole event so very, very special!!

And to Inne & Al - thank you so much for the gorgeous photos & videos - they are so clear & vivid - they take me happily back to that night - they are really a joy to see!!

Wow David!! That is an amazing video of "The Partisan" !!! Yes - extreme close up. It is all video of Leonard (not the band) and he is amazing - totally involved in the song - from the first beat to the last. Thanks!!
I love this video!! :D :D :D

I found your other videos - :) - they are partials but have lots of interesting close-up shots.
Never noticed the lovely red buttons on the sleeve of Javier's jacket before (visible in "Take This Waltz")
