A THOUSAND TEARS IN THE SEA

Post by o2marie »

Happy belated birthday, Leonard!
We share one love together: love for the beauty of words. You've been a great source of inspiration to me. You opened new horizons and I feel very grateful for that. Before discovering your work, I thought only French singers were able to write poetry...
This is my tribute: "A Thousand Tears In The Sea". I stole the melody of "A Thousand Kisses Deep" - I hope you don't mind - but at least, I changed the lyrics ;-) I recorded a video of this song on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NtR9kQXMPk and I pasted the lyrics below.
This is a song about discovering a great artist, falling in love with this artist, and finally trying to make the best out of it and just letting ourselves get inspired, separating the artist from the man, the reality from the fantasy.
I hope you'll enjoy all the subtleties of the subtext ;-)

A Thousand Tears In The Sea
Ode to Leonard Cohen

Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NtR9kQXMPk

I fell in love with the beauty
Of golden words whispered to me
I blindly swore fidelity
It was too late for mercy

They stabbed my heart, they wrapped my soul
In a soft and tight embrace
They drew a cross on my forehead
And kisses on my face

On Boogie Street in Babylon
It doesn’t matter where you’re from
Everyone knows the words of wisdom
Everyone sings on the tower of love

The holy dove has been caught again
And it's moving inside me
The only way to set it free:
Come within deep in me

An aborted love story
Due to the seeds of fantasy
A shooting star that disappears
Like a thousand tears... in the sea

You made me think, you made me sink
To the bottom of the sea
The only thing I could see
Was your light shining on me

I walked up your tower of song
I bowed to your mastery
You gave me ten poems of love
To send across the Seven Seas

The winds of change are blowing on me
My heart is now free
Floating on its own journey
Like a bottle in the sea

Dear Leonard.

So tell me. At age 75, is one closer to finding the bow tie? Does one ever find the bow tie? You are were 9 and I was 12 and I've been searching too.

I hope your birthday was a celebration is all ways possible.

Can't wait to see you in Columbus.

Thank you so very much for your art.

With deep appreciation,

This is very late ..... anyway, I really hope you had a happy birthday and have recovered from your upset tum. I have seen you live at Weybridge in the rain - the best evening of my life! Your music is always on in my car and never fails to relax me and keep me in the moment after a stressful day at work.

Very best wishes, lots of love and PLEASE look after yourself. xx

Happy Belated Birthday, LC. I guess it is only appropriate that I'm coming late to this party as I only discovered your music and poetry two years ago. The cliche better late than never has never been truer for me. I've spent two years getting to know your work, loving every minute of it. Last April during National Poetry Month I participated in one of those "write a poem a day for 30 days" schemes. About half way through the month, I wrote this poem, which--if you tilt your head and squint your eyes--I hope you will take as a compliment:

Mini-Greenhouses on the Moon*

Vegetation is coming to the moon, they say.
Plants can grow in zero gravity beneath
the lunar sway, imperial, mysterious
in amorous array.

Yes, moonbeam, you must eat
your broccoli, but moonlight can’t
live on Brussels sprouts alone.
Beneath the lunar sway,

there will be beauty: marigolds and
bleeding hearts, chicory and shooting stars,
imperial, mysterious, in amorous array.

My dear Man-in-the-moon, the cow may be
on to you soon, and the little prince will
laugh to see such a sport as cabbages
and caraway beneath the lunar sway,
imperial, mysterious, in amorous array.

Brassica is coming to the moon, they say.

*Italicized lines are from
Leonard Cohen’s “Democracy”

Spark for this poem came from:

With gratitude and best wishes,

I'm sorry I haven't posted.
I've found a new love, the love of my life.
But you made it possible. Easy to say, impossible to explain.
Thank you for this wonderful endless magic culminating in this equally endless concert tour of yours.

I'll love you always.

Dear Mr. Cohen:

Happy birthday. Thank you for your music.

When I was 19 I first heard you while in India, with some friends I was acquainted with who at 19 were able to perceive your towering depth. Story of Isaac, Sisters of Mercy, Suzanne. This was back in 1969.

I happened to have had a primary experience with Jesus and the promise of HIS indewling presence when HIS Holy Spirit moved and I asked HIM in in 1970. As a result, I struggled with Suzzane on the Jesus verse. Although human in many ways I thought for some reason you presumed HIM as human, until recently it hit me very stongly when I saw your video at the isle of Wight that you actually said "almost human," and it freed me to hear the song without reservation.

While the meaning in the song does not relate to my narrow concern, I was so happy to note that you said "almost human," I rested in the thought that you did not make him entirely human in the song. I've tasted the depth of HIS love and trust in his Divinity.

Your songs are deeply beautiful. I thank you. Happy birthday. And pardon me if this is offensive to you. I want to say the best I can to you. At the risk of being wrong, with all my love I say Jesus Loves You. Very happy birthday. I am a musician of soughts and have played harmonica, guitar, and piano for many years 40+. But my love for it got its substance from your work and Bob Dylan's as well. Thank you.

Suresh.
