Nominate LC for Canada's Walk of Fame Online by the end of the month:

Copying and pasting your comments here may help other nominators to focus on other elements or salient aspects of LC's career, cultural contribution, and oeuvre to give his nomination more thrust, strength, and force.

Personally, I have never understood this blinding oversight; perhaps, with our energy and none-too-shabby powers of persuasion, we could correct it.

 What a list  ~ and what a  that Leonard is not on it! It seems there must be some 'hold-out' deep in the corridors of decision-making [or is it strictly a 'vote' ~ U.S.-style :? ] that has precluded Leonard's being there. It's got to be politics... surely this can't represent the best thinking of those responsible for such an uneven list  .

Thanks for posting them all, Judith. You get a much better sense of it all, that way.

It is political, Lizzy. That's why we need an overwhelming show of support. The rich have got their channels and one of the richest, Moses Z., used to employ Denise D., at his media empire until she left said Emperor (who is, BTW, the father of one of the children of Kelley L.), to go to Sony; and, given these initial facts, since MZ is a friend of LC and, I've heard said, a DBD (as astonishing as that seems to me), it would be very awkward for LC to be a part of any Walk, day or night, moon or earth to grudgifying hellmasters. It is so hard for some people to say, simply, I am sorry I hurt you; I am sorry we will never speak again; I valued your friendship, and I will give it my all to ensure you are a part of my world. It would go a long way towards getting LC on the right Walk of Fame, though.

A simple apology would cure most of the rancour in the world; but, too many people nurse grudges and it breaks my heart (and, keeps me away from a lot of discussions here and always will because I am afraid of being attacked). That's another gory story . . .

But, it makes me think of Irving's couplet, one of the first things he sent me when we met through the mails when I was fourteen, each time I see a name of someone whom I love and was once a friend, it makes me very sad. I never go on the offensive and, I wouldn't say anything to hurt anyone, I might go over the top sometimes and say outrageous things; but, my aim is true and never malicious; I only want attention, like any human being; but, I have said things I wish I hadn't and done things I wish I could take back (like, punching my sister on the arm when she wouldn't give me the orange from her lunch when I was nine and still not adopted and I never got to say I was sorry and never will; it was the only time I've ever struck anyone and it learned me good).

I will apologise if I hurt someone inadvertently and always do. You know that first hand :). But, when I am under attack, after working in the trenches of the dirtiest bizth in the world for thirty-plus years, I am going to defend myself with the skills I had to learn in order to swim with the sharks but never become one of them; OTOH, I am not going to apologise for being a human being being human, not anymore, never again. Irving taught me that, too. His couplet is my motto and, gawd, I miss him so much, especially now, given it's around the first anniversary of his death, I just have so many questions I never got to ask, still, after forty years of friendship, damn):

Lord, I understand, the truth is out;
I kill him, he kills me, change and change about.

He wrote that to me when I was fifteen, when truth was "in" and "out." It grows with you as you grow with it. And, you finally accede: Nobody's perfect (or, everybody is). I feel so close to everything we've lost, we'll never have to lose it -- go nuts -- again :( . . . Ah, I always get sadly philosophicalifragious when I am procrastinating, L!

Someone mentioned you need to live in the sponsoring newspapers' areas. If anyone needs additional information and doesn't care about winning the trip (after all, it's for Leo, not me-me-meo), I suggest using a number beginning with the first six digits and inventing one with the last four. You can use your own email and, so, if you do win the trip, I'm pretty sure the committee will do its best to contact the winner via email as well:

416.535.xxxx
416.967.xxxx
416.325.xxxx
416.367.xxxx
416.585.xxxx

All are Toronto, Ontario designated numbers so, fit the criteria in that regard.

You're on a tour, er, tear, this morning, Sweetness. Good to see you up and attem, as always.

Back to the struggle; will try to put in an appearance this weekend or so . . .

Love, Jf/ox

Hi Judith ~

The area where the newspaper is published... or of its readership? If the latter... hard copy or online? Run a ballot in the newspaper? Or, instead, have the locals trek down to the newspaper's home office and stick a paper ballot in the designated box  . Who cares where the newspaper is published? What does that have to do with a person's fame or impact on an industry?

In today's world, it doesn't make sense [at least to me] that one would need to live near the building where it's generated... and, with so many laptops and satellite-style contributions coming in from PCs and laptops... what does it matter... know what I mean? Talk about politics... especially when 'fame' is a 'worldwide' concept, certainly moreso than not. So, the question becomes, "Who in our neighbourhood thinks . . . " In fact, seems to me that the question might better preclude the 'locals' and have those further out in those concentric circles be asked, "Which person has reached and impacted the outermost territories, fame, y'know, fame?" Is that not the nature of true fame? If you want a provincial vote, make it a provincial award... Local Favourites 2007 Award. If you want fame, ask those who are out of earshot, but have still heard and been positively impacted.

More later on the rest...

Dear Judithia ~
A simple apology would cure most of the rancour in the world; but, too many people nurse grudges and it breaks my heart (and, keeps me away from a lot of discussions here and always will because I am afraid of being attacked). That's another gory story . . .

Truth and sadness in one fell swoop... there are so many discussions here that would benefit by your input, your knowledge, your perceptions, your experience, your expression. There are also safe paths leading from the high road to the well for refreshing nourishment and pleasure... continuous walking without hydration will leave us, well... high and dry  . We will draw it and drink together ~ "Here's to you... " There's nothing I'd love more at the moment than to see BoHo appear in the BoM thread... and any number of other elsewheres 8) .

I wish I could have known Irving, personally, as you and select others came to know him. At this point, I'd settle for at least having met him. That point has passed, though; the way life has a way of doing.

Ah, yes, learning by experience... what a way to go. Experience teaches us many things... and, in several, we've been each other's best teachers :D ~ well, okay, and some credit to a couple who walk the corridors of airports  . "Here's to you, who forgive what you do, and to those who don't even care... " ~ I think of Gypsey Wife [MzV] when I see or hear those lyrics 8) .

For Leonard, we need to do all we can to break this political filibuster... take it to the Senate floor, guys... it has no place here.

Love,
Lizzy :D

Hey, Judithia ~

I believe for every drop
of rain that falls...
a flower grows...
some tears may flow...
but trust enfolds...
be/comes pure gold...
oh, I believe...
yes,
I believe...

. . .

Sunshine on my shoulders
makes me happy...
sunshine in my mind
can make me smile...

. . .
I love to go a wandering,
Along the mountain track.
And as I go, I love to sing,
My knapsack on my back.
Valderi, valdera, valdera,
Valde ha ha ha ha ha ha,
Valderi, valdera,
My knapsack on my back.

I love to wander by the stream
That dances in the sun.
So joyously it calls to me.
"Come join my happy song."
Valderi, valdera, valdera,
Valde ha ha ha ha ha ha,
Valderi, valdera
"Come join my happy song."

I wave my hat to all I meet,
And they wave back to me,
And blackbirds call so loud and sweet
From every greenwood tree.
Valderi, valdera, valdera,
Valde ha ha ha ha ha ha,
Valderi, valdera
From every greenwood tree.

High over head, the skylarks wing,
They never rest at home
But just like me, they love to sing,
As o'er the world we roam.
Valderi, valdera, valdera,
Valde ha ha ha ha ha ha,
Valderi, valdera,
As o'er the world we roam.

Oh, may I go a wandering,
Until the day I die!
Oh, may I always laugh and sing,
Beneath God's clear blue sky!
Valeri, valdera, valdera,
Valde ha ha ha ha ha ha,
Valderi, valdera
Beneath God's clear blue sky!

Love, lotsa love, tons of love, G~d's love,
Lizzy

I'm glad you're here, Judith :D .

I attempted to post my vote, but I'm not a Canadian subject...end of.
Who made this list?
I'll tell you this: if Mr. Cohen isn't fit to receive a nomination, there's no future for art in Canada 8)

It is the hall of fame, buddy, not the hall of art. Hockey players and models ant tutti quanti on it. Look carefuly.

Hall of fame.... ppfff...Leonard Cohen entered alive in the legend, not only in Canada, but all over the world. This hall is only a detail that has no importance in his career at this point. Nothing much. But Ey! Nothing bad also.

And a little more yac-waka-de-yaaaAAAaaak around celebrities can not do wrong for people whose job needs visibility. And to complete your information, take a walk in objective reality, and you'll see the truth : Leonard Cohen is regarded as a huge respected star & art in Canada is going very well. Très très bien. I sware on the Irish blood of my grand-mother. 8)

But :? you are Scotch not Irish, isn't it? What the eck. It is true. Dot.

P.S. : Leonard Cohen is a hall of fame.

Where everybody put grafitii on it.

P.S. (2) : But ey!

> I attempted to post my vote, but I'm not a Canadian subject...end of.<<

Erm . . . Just a minute, there, Handy Man o' Mine! You can submit your nomination using the location Toronto, Ontario and make a 'phone number with the first six digits I listed in an earlier message. You don't have to physically be in Canada (though, I must admit, art would be on the upswing, and so would a few hearts if you were). You might be a bizthness d00d in Scotland on bizthness and just cannot resist nominating our man from your laptop, right? So, get thee to a ballotry.

> Who made this list<<

Wreck execs, mostly, IYAM. Bizthicianists. Assholes. The steaming scheming works, IOW.

> I'll tell you this: if Mr. Cohen isn't fit to receive a nomination, there's no future for art in Canada<<

Well, he did number among the top three influential maestros of the twentieth century in The Globe and Mail's millennium poll, right? That's what matters; that's where the art (still) is. LC, McLuhan, and Glenn Gould. And, I wouldn't call that Walk of Fame list art, not by a country smile, no way, no hell. It's part of what Debord call's The Spectacle, image becoming nothing but mere capital. It's all about the cheques, right, in the twenty-worst century?

Where's Marshall McLuhan, k.d. lang, J. K. Galbraith, Ignatieff, Paul Martin, Trudeau, Irving, David Staines, all the top-of-the-croppers? Nowhere. Because? They don't make cash registers sing (even if that's a myth based on payola, and back-room shenanigans. Syndicate or Corporate, take yer pickets elsewhere :)). That's why LC doesn't have "hit singles." He never played the game, never forked over the half-mil in "promotional fees" to the record companies, was never vain enough to "hire-a-hit" (thank gawd).

C'est La Vie? Que sera sera (and, Holly Cole does a lovely cover of that one, too, to tie up the loose rends, on Don't Smoke In Bed). Her register isn't really firm on the high end of the scale; but, she's dirty sweet and completely real. She covered one of my songs, Unnecessarily Blue (I've got a demo of it somewhere, just everything's still packed here except my books I need to write the Leo book) when she was just starting her career; we used to hang together around A Space and the Music Gallery with Victor Coleman, bp Nichol, et.allofem. Those were wonderful magical times.

C'est la vie. That's life (largesse).

:D Oh, that's great, Jimbo... I love that song... I've always loved that song. I said to a friend recently that it's one where it's impossible for singing of the song and sadness to exist in the same space... like smiles are said to have the same effect, even if only at a molecular level, as we all know how smiling can be when we do feel sad, as in barely helping at all. So, laughter, might be the better example and, not coincidentally, it's one song that contains that very thing beautifully. For me, the song, even if you don't feel good in the beginning of it, picks you up as you go.

I remember reading the book "Heidi" when I was a little girl and, similar to the scenes there, I've always imagined a mountain trail in the Alps or Ireland, when I sing it. How's about if you play it and we'll sing it together? Have a good night's rest, Jimbo.
