Leonard Cohen plays rugby

Post by Pete »

I just turned on the TV and scanned through the teletext pages and suddenly, there in front of me, on page 300 was the headline

LEONARD COHEN SET FOR SCOTLAND TEST

This refers to the forthcoming England v Scotland rugby union match.

Leonard Cohen playing rugby for England??
Surely not, he's Canadian :)

My shock subsided when I took a closer look..... it said

LEONARD/COHEN SET FOR SCOTLAND TEST

I looked on page 371 for the details

Jason LEONARD and Ben COHEN are both in the team for Saturday

Oh well, I would have gone if it was our Leonard. He might have sang a national anthem at least.

I'm still hoping that the Welsh Rugby Union employ him as a motivational expert (and Everybody Knows that Welsh rugby needs motivating)

 Well, perhaps that explains why Leonard Cohen uttered the following lines in his poem 'The Escape' (penned some years ago, now):

"We are not exactly young
but there is still some pleasure
to be squeezed from these leather bags"

(Deflated, the old style balls did look a bit like bags, with their leather lace that had to be laced up to close the slit at the top where the bladder's valve was accessed.)

Cheers
