I feel a great sadness and loss even though this day was inevitable.
From the old boxing stadium in Dublin all those years ago to the freezing night in the Römersteinbruch in St. Margarethen/Austria and to his last album he filled a void which made a huge difference for us.
Condolences to his family and may he R.I.P.

"We intend to keep the flame alive and hope your love of his work will continue to be expressed on this Forum"
The flame is alive more than ever now, and will be kept alive by our passion, which keeps living beyond the mortal facts. So long Leonard, thanks for the beauty.

It's so sad - but the worldwide reaction has been remarkable. So many people in comments sections on endless sites remark how there is not a single negative or snarky comment. So many people talking about the effect Leonard has had on their lives and how they are typing through tears.

Go By Brooks, by Leonard Cohen.

Go by brooks, love
Where fish stare
Go by brooks,
I will pass there.

Go by rivers,
where eels throng,
Rivers, love
I won't be long.

Go by oceans,
Where whales sail,
Oceans, love,
I will not fail.

Wow! What incredible tributes! We have lost such a special and adored person.
But we have music that makes us smile, laugh and cry (and takes us through every other emotion too) and treasured memories of superb concerts.
Love you, Leonard.
Cilla.

My heartfelt condolences to Leonard's family
and to all you good people who really care for music!

So here's my story with Leonard Cohen's music:

Some people can say which artist means the most to them. They just know. I learned the hard way who it is for me.
There was this night when I lay alone in a hospital room, waiting for surgery in the next morning, with no way of knowing what the outcome would be.
I had said goodbye to the ones I love. I had said my prayers. When all was said and done, with nothing left, I just listened to music. "Old Ideas" and "Popular Problems" got me through that night.

I humbly say thank you for the unexpected and profound solace I found in Leonard Cohen's music that night.

His voice will be missed so much in today's crazy world.

Let's all do our best to keep his songs alive!

Leonard, dearest poet and songwriter, I'm so grateful and happy because you existed. Your words were a light. As you said to Marianne, I hope you have a very good journey. I don't know much to say, but thank you. Thank you so much.

Unfortunately I don't have the time today to read all the fascinating messages just yet. But here is how I feel:

You got me singing, Lenny

You got me singing, Lenny
Even though the news is bad
You got me singing
The only song I ever had

You got me singing
Ever since the river died
You got me thinking
Of places we could hide

You got me singing
even tho the world is gone
You got me thinking
that I'd like to carry on

You got me singing
even tho it all looks grim
You got me singing
the Hallelujah hymn

You got me singing
Like a prisoner in a jail
You got me singing
Like my pardon's in the mail

You got me wishing
Our little love would last
You got me thinking
Like those people of the past

You got me singing
(Signing,) even tho the world is gone
You got me thinking
(Thinking that) I'd like to carry on

You got me singing
even it all went wrong
You got me singing
the Hallelujah song

It was such sad news in the morning with this news. Now it' evening and it's still true- the greatest poet of music has left the stage forever.
I was lucky to attend 4 live performances, and although I never came closer to Mr. Cohen than the 2nd row in a concert venue, I feel as if I had lost a close friend.
Thank you for everything, Leonard Cohen. You will be remembered. Always.

Although I would not presume to have known Leonard Cohen, the man, I do nonetheless feel a keen sense of loss at his passing. He was a songsmith like no other, and to my ears, at least, was truly born with the gift of a golden voice. He (alongside John Prine) has ruled my musical landscape for many, many years, and it is very sad to think that there will be no more new songs. Leonard has been so creative in recent years that I cannot help but wonder what other great works might have been if he had only been given a little more time (usually, such speculations are not really serious when an artist dies at 82 years of age, but it seems Leonard was always an exception…).

By nature, I am an unrepentant optimist, but this morning I was overcome by a feeling of gloom and a sense that we are living in a sad, old world. At the time, I was actually standing outside in the rain at our town’s Remembrance Day ceremony, contemplating the repeated sacrifices of war, so perhaps it is not surprising that my thoughts were tending towards the bleak as I tried to absorb the bad news of the day. Oddly enough, though, my spirits began to lift the more I started letting Leonard’s songs and words drift through my consciousness. Part of the reason I have been so captivated by Leonard’s work is that he often seemed to express a determined and hard-won optimism in the face of our various problems and failings (there is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in; or you got me singing, even tho’ the news is bad…). He was able to reveal heart-breaking beauty even as he considered a wide range of situations and difficulties. His work reflected a subtle humour, and he had a remarkable flair for combining the sacred with the profane. He was able to almost magically divine the simultaneous joys and tragedies that define the human condition. Attending a Leonard Cohen concert was a powerful emotional experience, and I feel very fortunate to have attended so many shows in 2008-2013, even if it did involve a great deal of “financial and geographical inconvenience”. That first concert in Fredericton, in particular, was an experience that I will never forget. Thank you, Mr. Cohen.

My sincere condolences to Leonard’s family.

You saw me through black darknesses, a comfort and a staff, Leanord, and out again to the light.Your poems and music sustain me still. You are singing for me now in my deep sadness at your passing.

Thank you Erena, for bringing Leonard into my life fifty-two years ago.

In the Gospel of Thomas, Jesus said to his disciples, "Compare me to something and tell me what I am like." Thomas said to him, "Teacher, my mouth is utterly unable to say what you are like." Where other disciples had tried, Thomas kept silent - because he knew that his words could not encompass the truth.

I feel a humility of a similar kind when thinking of how best to express my appreciation for the work of Leonard Cohen. He has inspired my poetry, lent his voice to my longing, and been an exemplar in the realm of spirituality. I, too, have embraced the Zen path. I too have studied deeply in the religions and the philosophies. I have loved and lost and loved again, often accompanied by his songs. And I have written poetry - at times with ambitions of acclaim. Against all this I hear his voice, in the introduction to the documentary about the Tibetan book of the Dead: “Soon we all will die - our hopes and fears will be irrelevant.”

I am profoundly grateful to have encountered his writing and his music. I am profoundly grateful to have been in the audience when Leonard, on Canada Day 2008, was on the stage in Bislett stadium in Oslo, Norway. And I am profoundly sad at his passing. Gassho.
