We met with Kerrie Long from the Edmonton International Film Festival http://www.edmontonfilmfest.com and she agreed to take over financial and managerial responsibility for the 2016 Leonard Cohen event, so it becomes a full part of the EIFF's 2016 event. 2016 is their 30th year in 2016 so it is a nice way for them to celebrate by adding the extra Leonard Cohen facet. They are providing a full time volunteer coordinator from their organization to liaise with us as our planning goes forward to help integrate things Leonard Cohen-ish into their planning. We will have a presence throughout their Sept. 30-Oct. 8, 2016 festival but will still plan to have the musical events over three consecutive days in that period so international fans do not have to stay for the entire 9 day period of the film festival to experience the things they are coming for. Once those three days are chosen we will replace the dates currently in the promo on the Files. EIFF has charitable status in Canada so this makes raising funds easier as individuals and corporations donating to the event are able to get a tax receipt. A very favourable development all around!

More background: The Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF) is a nine-day film festival in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, hosted at Landmark Cinemas at Edmonton City Centre.

It began in 1986 as ‘Local Heroes’ a smaller 3-day film festival in March. Over time the festival grew in size and scope. In 2003 the festival was moved to September, expanded to 9-days, and renamed the Edmonton International Film Festival. Their schedule usually has about 50 feature-length dramas and documentaries, and more than 100 short films programmed into packages that include Subway Lunchbox Shorts.

The volunteer coordinator who will be working with us is listed in the left sidebar of the above URL.

Here are our latest plans for the 2016 Edmonton International Leonard Cohen Event Thursday September 29th through Sunday, October 2nd 2016. We are meeting with the Edmonton Arts Council tomorrow about funding:

The 30th Anniversary of the Edmonton International Film Festival in 2016 presents
An Edmonton Creative Life Celebration
What: Taking place the first few days of the 2016 Edmonton International Film Festival, the celebration is built upon the spirit of Leonard Cohen.
Fifty years ago, in the autumn of 1966, Mr. Cohen lived and worked in Edmonton for a number of weeks. As a successful and acclaimed Canadian poet, he had been invited to be a writer-in-residence at the University of Alberta. This proved to be a seminal period of his life, a time when he decided to pursue a career as a full time performing songwriter, in addition to the other creative sides of his life. It was a watershed in his career and a time that many around Edmonton remember with great warmth.
This grass roots celebration encourages Edmonton artists to produce work in all genre’s in the spirit of Leonard Cohen, through use of his work as fodder for new endeavours and new artistic statements or simply to use the inspiration of his creative life as role model.
When: The first weekend of the 2016 Edmonton International Film Festival, Thursday September 29th through Sunday, October 2nd 2016. The full Festival runs Thursday, September 29th – Saturday, October 8th
Who: Core Organizing Group under the auspices of EIFF: Kerrie Long, Kim Solez, Mallory Chipman, Ann Vriend, Brian Dunsmore, Community resources
Where: Multiple Venues around the city

This sounds very substantive, Kim.
Love the idea of Sharon and Sylvie being there for the weekend. Hope that aspect comes to fruition!

As part of the preparations for the 2016 Edmonton International Leonard Cohen Event we had applied for a grant from the Edmonton Arts Council to help support the event. Unfortunately this grant application was not funded. Given the absence of other support, we have made the reluctant decision to cancel the Edmonton event. We are still in discussions about this and an official cancellation will come later.

Meanwhile the preparations for the 2016 Amsterdam International Leonard Cohen Event look great with many positive features http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/amst.html ! I encourage Cohen fans to plan to attend that event.
