Suzanne Vega first love and Leonard

Post by jdhayes »

I attended an excellent Suzanne Vega concert last night at the Olympia in Dublin. During the concert she spoke for about 10 minutes about Leonard and his role in her first crush. She was 18 and at a summer camp teaching singing and folk music to youngsters and she fancied another group leader. She spoke about how "uncool" it was at the time to say you liked listening to his music so when the heart-throb asked her if she like Leonard Cohen she said she did during certain moods. When he replied that he loved LC all the time she fell for him straight away. A lovely interlude in a great concert. She then proceeded to sing the song she composed at 18 to celebrate her first big love.

You missed a great night Gwen. She plays in Cork tonight. BTW the name of the song she wrote (when she was 18!) is Gypsy. Have a listen and you will not be disappointed.

Going to see Tori Amos in Dublin on 7th May. Does anyone know if she sings Famous Blue Raincoat at her concerts?

I went to see her at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall yesterday (16 June 2015) and she told this story again as an intro to her song 'Gypsy'.

I captured it all on video and here it is - the Leonard bit staring at about 1 min 40

Hi,
Thanks for the youtube video, .
I was at the concert also and really enjoyed it especially the solo passages.
The guitarist (Jerry, I think) was fine, but in my seat I found his guitar sound level took away the intimacy of Suzanne's singing and words.

I despair of the audiences at The Phil, I'm not a shouter or a dancer but even Elvis Costello the previous night struggled to get an audience reaction.

Her chat about her song Gypsy took me back to a different era.
For those who don't know, the boy who loved Leonard 'all the time' was from Liverpool.
We have good taste in music, women and football !

I thought her new songs are of the highest standard and held their own against her back catalogue.

ps. The refurbished bar in the Phil has so many things wrong with it, I may write my first letter of complaint!!

Yes the new central bar at the liverpool philharmonic hall doesn't work anything like as well as the old 2 bar system - worse queues , fewer seats etc .The staff find it hard to cope esp at really well attended concerts ,

Still a great concert hall, and when the redevelopment is finished there will be a new smaller performance space in addition to the main hall .

Would be a great place to see Leonard ( not much chance though )
