Wanted: Your opinions on the LC Forum for PhD Thesis

Post by mamtear »

Hi everyone,

My name is Maggie Matear and I'm a doctoral candidate at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario Canada. I'm researching things that make on-line communities like the Leonard Cohen forum successful. Jarkko has kindly given me permission to ask for your help.

I'm collecting information for my PhD thesis, so I have a survey at http://queensbusiness.qualtrics.com/SE/ ... yNGJ5UriGU

It is completely anonymous and the data will ONLY be used for my thesis, and not for any commercial purposes.
People who take the survey are entered into a draw for one of 5 $50 Amazon.com gift certificates.

I would really appreciate your help so I can finish my thesis...I would love to get 100+ surveys completed from LCF.

Thank you so much for considering it.

All the best,

Maggie Matear, PhD Candidate

Very interesting grounds for a thesis and very relevant in today's world.
Very happy that you focused on Jarkko's/Leonard's forum.
This is a shining example of a great forum.
Are you focusing on others, as well?
If so, are you at liberty to share with us what those are?

I have just completed this survey, which (in my humble opinion) is very well designed and certainly one I enjoyed completing. 8)

I would encourage other Forum members, who are not averse to surveys, to do so also; let's hope that down the track we get some feedback about the results from Maggie.;-)

Cheers,
Andrew :)

P.S. What this survey did for me, is remind me about all the different aspects that our Forum community can be appreciated for. :D

I've just completed the survey and it doesn't really take that long... maybe 20 minutes? Well spent.

I'm wondering if, perhaps, this thread could get moved to the News section, so as to get greater readership and, hopefully, better participation. We have so many who come here, but not necessarily to the Everything Else section.

Considering this is for a doctoral thesis that has the LC Forum, itself [as well as participation by the members], as part of it, it sure seems like News to me. Would love to see this woman get her 100, but feel it may be very slow going if her request remains in Everything Else... when her request definitely relates to Leonard!

I've just taken it as well. Highly recommend that everyone do it. It's very well-designed and gives a lot of food for thought. I'd be very curious to see the results!

This was a great survey, it made me realize why, warts and all, I am proud to be a member of the LC Community.

Hi everyone,
Thanks SO much for the great response to date...I have about 40 surveys so far, so things are looking up!

Lizzytfish- You're right, this is a really positive place! I've also looked at forums that focus on info for new mothers, an artist's forum, a computer support group, the Bronies, and some others. My long-term interest is in social policy... what can we learn about how people interact in communities like this one, so that we can keep the organizations that run them healthy and sustainable? That's why some of the questions ask you about buying behaviour, as well as about helping behaviour.

And thank you to those who suggested the survey is well-written! Anyone who is interested in learning the results of the survey can get in touch with me at mmatear@business.queensu.ca (it will probably be 4-6 months before everything is finished up).

I'm very grateful for your help...

Maggie
