Grandpa Again
Re: Grandpa Again
I cannot comprehend why we are discussing the decision to have a child, made by two responsible adults .
All around us are children who come from families destroyed by addiction, abandonment, poverty, violence, disease.. how are they better off than children of homosexual couples? How are they better off than children with a single, but responsible and loving parent? I have friends, both male and female, who brought up their kids alone - and kids turned out great. I have homosexual friends, who are adopting their second baby from an orphanage, - giving two kids a chance at normal life..

I love your posting, KatzieMtl ~ to revisit part of it:
"I cannot comprehend why we are discussing the decision to have a child, made by two responsible adults."
I also wonder at why we're doing anything in this thread other than to offer our heartfelt congratulations to whomever... and, if none are to be found within us, simply to initiate another thread in the Comments section, if one feels they must discuss and dissect any or all of the variables of this great event.
Speaking of Hallmark cards... it seems there must be a whole section missing, such as "Congratulations on your marriage! [turn page] Are you sure this is the right thing to do at your age? How long have you known each other? Do you share one another's spiritual views? Do you have a savings account? Did you live together first?"

Re: Grandpa Again
My wishes to little Viva, her mother and to the whole extended family.

Ps: i understood that someone just brought up, that there still is, sadly, the social ostracizing or denigrating of individuals or so called “groups” within society as a practical reality. I feel there is no harm in mentioning the still existing discrimination, quite the contrary, doesn’t it help to weaken social taboos? Correct me if i’m wrong, e.g. in Germany: in 2011 a “homosexual” “couple” is legally forbidden to adopt a child - some years ago they would have been persecuted only for being “homosexual”...I understand, one may get to feel the “differences” only if one is personally concerned. So cast off the shackles of yesterday... shoulder to shoulder into the fray ... (Mary Poppins)
Others may not be as lucky. Viva is certainly born into a very special loving place.

Re: Grandpa Again
Well-spoken Marie...and well-spoken Katzie!
We are talking about a new life...a baby...and a much-loved little girl. There is too little of this in our world today. I celebrate her birth, her parents, and her extended loving family!
Changes in the structure of what some deem as "normal" or the "correct family situation" have been evolving whether one may think this is right or wrong. There are thousands of married couples with children who are unable emotionally to give either their children or each other, love. Love comes on many different levels, as I'm sure we all know, and it isn't always "traditional".
But at this moment, we have a beautiful baby girl, created out of love (friendship love). A beautiful woman carried her for 9 months, and as any mother can attest that is a love that is so deep...to feel that life within you....maternal love. She is now surrounded by two families who will give her support and love for all her life....familial love. And she will also know God's love. Let's just let the families celebrate!

Because it's the internet and too many obsesive people can't help themselves. I have never understood the need of people poking their noses into the lives of "celebrities" and worse still pronouncing judgement.
I wish everyone involved in this birth of this child well.

Re: Grandpa Again
According to what I read, it seems that Rufus must have been very affected by the death of his mother, naming the baby after her and than greeting her with these words. Leonard Cohen is saying this when he is performing for a French public, so maybe it is a tribute to both grand-ma&pa from both families? I miss her also, Kate. I would like Martha to sing more of her mother and aunt's stuff now that she is over with this Piaf affair. Kids should not be afraid to walk in their famous parents steps once in a while, if you ask me - although it must be frightening when you think about it, when your are young and not sure of who you really are and just wanting to explore your reality, it would be like to put the self in jeopardy, to dissolve yourself in somebody you are not, even though (or because) it is your own mum or dad. But at a certain point of maturity there is no danger anymore, I figure, the person is strong enough to do it. And I would like that Rufus and Martha pay a tribute to the dear sisters duet one day. I never particularly liked Rufus's style, his singing sounds like a vielle à roue to me, but it is just me, and Rufus himself is likeable enough.
Leonard Cohen has a new love? Are you talking about the chanteuse with a big E and little e in her name, what's her name, though ?

"When I think about Leonard Cohen, the first thing I imagine is death."!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the first line of an article entitled 'Superstar spawn - Music lovers may have high hopes for the new Wainwright-Cohen baby. Yet can talent be bred?', by Tanya Gold on page 30 of today's Guardian (UK newspaper), Wed 23 Feb 2011. If I had more time I'd scan it. Though it's not that interesting.
Personally speaking, when I think about Leonard Cohen, the first thing I imagine is life. What about others...?

Re: Grandpa Again
Sometimes musicality runs in families but some of the greatest talents come from nowhere we can fathom or nothing we can predict. Elvis and Bob Marley, are two I can think of off the bat.
Re: Grandpa Again
It was an odd article, at best. I read it and thought what a great time I guess she had trashing so many people in one swipe because they were born to celebrities and still had a good life.
Death? What an odd thing to me for someone to have as their very first thought when they think of Leonard.

Maybe it was Death of a Ladies Man, all she knew of Cohen.

That article is trailer trash reporting and that sentence also astounded me. Lot of words come to mind as the first I'd think of for Leonard but I'd choose inspirational as that is what he is to me above all else.wakeupmartin wrote:"When I think about Leonard Cohen, the first thing I imagine is death."!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, that would make sense. I wonder. Or at least that may have been her indelible impression. A shame. Coping with life is much closer to the truth for me.
