Sarah McLachlan, Peter Gabriel, Iggy Pop Pay Homage to Leonard Cohen on New Tribute Album
Mavis Staples, James Taylor, Nathaniel Rateliff, Norah Jones, David Gray and Bill Frisell are also among the contributors

Ah, the tribute album — a time-honoured tradition. There's certainly no shortage of them, including those paying homage to the late, great Leonard Cohen. There's yet another on the horizon, as Stereogum reports.

Here It Is: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen is due November 11 via Blue Note, and features contributions from Sarah McLachlan (who does "Hallelujah," because obviously), Peter Gabriel, Iggy Pop, Mavis Staples, James Taylor, Norah Jones, David Gray, Nathaniel Rateliff, Bill Frisell and more. See the tracklist below.

Earlier this year, a new Cohen anthology collection Hallelujah & Songs from His Albums was released following the sale of the Canadian laureate's song catalogue to Hipgnosis Song Management, which has also acquired a percentage of Neil Young's songwriting catalogue and the rights to material from Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie, Jimmy Iovine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom DeLonge and more.

Here It Is: A Tribute to Leonard Cohen:

1. Steer Your Way - Norah Jones
2. Here It Is - Peter Gabriel
3. Suzanne - Gregory Porter
4. Hallelujah - Sarah McLachlan
5. Avalanche - Immanuel Wilkins
6. Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye - Luciana Souza
7. Coming Back to You - James Taylor
8. You Want It Darker - Iggy Pop
9. If It Be Your Will - Mavis Staples
10. Seems So Long Ago, Nancy - David Gray
11. Famous Blue Raincoat - Nathaniel Rateliff
12. Bird on the Wire - Bill Frisell

Looks like a great line-up for this tribute album. Agree with Kush in looking forward to Mavis and Norah. I was at a Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats concert, in Bristol, UK, just a week after Leonard passed. He played a very moving version of Chelsea Hotel #2, which was really well received. Emotional, but then hearing any of Leonard’s songs, at that time was emotional. I’m looking forward to hearing Nathaniel’s version of “Famous Blue Raincoat” but particularly intrigued to hear what Iggy Pop is going to bring to “You want it Darker”… :D

I'm not usually a big fan of tribute albums, but I might actually buy this one -- interesting line-up of artists, and the snippet of James Taylor was quite enjoyable.

Thanks to everyone for the heads-up!

The Nathaniel Rateliff one and the James Taylor one already posted by Lisa. All 3 are in the link below.

Thanks B4 ! Very nice indeed. I think my favorite so far is Nathaniel Rateliff's Famous Blue Raincoat, but the ones I have heard so far are all great. A very promising album indeed. And it also seems the album on the whole is quite cohesive, if that makes sense.

So, why bother buying the CD when all the songs are online for free on or before the official release date -- and, made available by the record company itself!? I think the record company should show some respect for those of us who forked out money for their CDs by letting us hear and enjoy the album first, and for a good period of time (maybe a month?) before making it freely available to anyone with access to an internet connection. That's my 5 cents (we no longer have pennies in Canada, so the least I can do is a nickel).

My initial thoughts on the album

Over the weekend I have listened to this album several times. For me it’s a mixed bag. I appreciate the interpretations of “steer your way”, “Here it is”, “coming back to you” and albeit borderline “seems so long ago Nancy” .
The other interpretations on the album didn’t do it for me and the 2 instrumental interpretation didn’t add anything new

In general the arrangements of the songs tend to be on the jazzy side (unfortunately)

I,m sure you do not all agree with me ;-) :D
