Hi Kush,

Ingredients: a prescient and galvanizing Dylan song, with a remarkable delivery/interpretation
by someone who very much knew what the song meant and had a personal history that gave
him credibility with his fans to sing it out. (Folk musicologists will recognize an unintentional
pun.) That person, in 1963, was in very fine vocal power. The song was written in 1962. Dylan's
singing influence isn't hidden here. Got the impression that the cover could be a channeling of
something of Walt Whitman. Thanks for posting the link.

Hi Steven,

Indeed a remarkable delivery. Pete Seeger was in very fine vocal form. I did not quite get the Walt Whitman connection though ... but your reference did bring back memories of a very nicely bound copy of Leaves of Grass that was one of my father's prized collections. My own Randall Knife, you could say :)

I cane across another nice video of Tommy Sands singing Little Boxes followed by Happy Birthday to Pete by Bruce Springsteen, Tommy Sands etc. led by Joan Baez.

Hi Kush,

Whitman and Seeger had an "everyman" quality that was part of their personas and
creative expression. I believe that each truly cared for others. Whitman stepped away
from poetry to care for injured Civil War soldiers. Caring wasn't second fiddle to artistic
passion. Same can be said of Seeger. Got the Randall Knife reference immediately.
You are fortunate to have that kind of connection with your father with the copy
of Leaves of Grass. Will check out the link in your above post later in the week.

A very young and very stoned!! Johnny Cash appears on Pete Seeger's TV show to defend Native American rights and sing a Peter LaFarge song...Pete Seeger himself re-emerged in the mid 60s after the blacklist years...
