Guy Clark

Post by Tony »

I have just bought this cd: 'This one's for him: a tribute to Guy Clark.' Lots of well known country singers on it: Rodney Crowe, Lyle Lovett, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nelson, Suzy Boguss, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Joe Ely, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Rodney Foster, Kris Kristofferson, Vince Gill, Robert Earl Keen, Jerry Jeff Walker and others. Really enjoyable.

Thanks for these tracks Tony. I have not been able to hear sample track clips of this album anywhere. The first Guy Clark song I heard was Johnny Cash version of Let him roll
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfF5k1nbxgA&ob=av2e (couple of familiar characters appear on this video)
The first Townes Van Zandt song I heard was Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard's Pancho and Lefty. I bought my first Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt albums on the same day - both live albums - when I realized they were not just names attached in parentheses at the end of Johnny Cash or Willie/Merle songs. Enough history.
Guy Clark's songwriting is a little different from TVZ's - more like snapshots of life. In this interview the man sometimes called the poet laureate of Texas says "....Texas is known for storytellers and bullshitters and that just seems to fit perfectly into writing songs."

The wind had it's way with her hair
The blues had a way with her smile
She had a way of her own
Like prisoners have a way with a file.

She ain't goin' nowhere she's just leavin'
She ain't goin' nowhere she can't breathe in

Glad you all enjoyed the links and thanks for yours. I saw Guy Clark here about 25 years ago and I keep missing his UK visits. I hope to catch him again some day. As you can imagine, there is not much of his music on the radio in the UK but I make do with the albums I have.

Nice link Cate. Susanna Clark appears in a few songs...two that I know of

Susanna don't you cry babe
Love's a gift that's surely handmade
- from LA Freeway

Susanna Oh Susanna when it comes my time
Bury me south of that Red River line

- from Red River

p.s. I had never heard of Shawn Camp before, that is a really terrific cover. Willie's voice is a little shaky these days but he puts in lot in this song.

I got this album last week and it is indeed a terrific double CD. I enjoyed almost all of the tracks. A little disappointed couple of my favorite Guy Clark songs were not there, Out in the Parking Lot and South Coast of Texas. On the other hand I heard Instant Coffee Blues for the first time, an instant classic.
Could not find a decent youtube version..

He washed all the road dirt
from his face and from his neck
And sat down at her table
she picked up his check.
She took him home for reasons
that she did not understand
Him, he had the answers
but he did not play his hand.
For him he knew the taste
of this wine very well
It all goes down so easy
but the next day is hell.

Morning - "Man was I drunk,"
she whispered in the shower.
While he lay there and smoked
his way through the final hour.
And she felt wholly empty
like she'd felt it every time.
And he was feelin' just the same,
'cept he was tryin' to make it rhyme.
Time was of the essence
so they both did their best,
to meet up in the kitchen
feelin’ fully dressed

She just had to go to work,
and he just had to go.
And she knew where and he knew how
to blow it off and so,
They shot the breeze quite cavalier
to the boilin' of the pot.
And sang the Instant Coffee Blues
and never fired a shot.

And him he hit the driveway
with his feelin's in a case.
And her she hit the stoplight
and touched up her face.

So you tell them the difference
between caring and not.
And that it's all done with mirrors
lest they forgot.

I said it's all done with mirrors,
of which they have none.
To blend the instant coffee blues
into the morning sun

Glad you are enjoying it, Kush. I am playing it regularly, much more than the latest LC cd, dare I say it!

Couple of spoken word poems

The Dark

Randall Knife

Randall Knife is probably my favorite Guy Clark track. This rendition is haunting.

Oh my hand burned for the Randall Knife
There at the bottom drawer
I found a tear for my father's life
All that it stood for.

Hi Kush,

"Randall Knife" is my favorite from among the Guy Clark tracks that I've heard.

Not saying whether or not it brought a tear (or two) to my eyes.

Hi Everyone,

There are Guy Clark videos that can be seen from this page: http://www.guyclark.com/videos.html.
Haven't yet watched them.

Instant Coffee Blues sung by Suzy Bogguss on the tribute album. I had posted the lyrics earlier.
