Im pleased to see at least two other LC fans hold Brel's Les Marquises in high esteem. Its a big one for me too. Striking since we seem to have little else in common.

... well, of course, there's always Leonard! :) I suppose, though, that in the end, it speaks more for the quality of Cohen and Brel than for anything else... Unless you happen to be a huge fan of reader-response criticism...

Oh. This is a hard one -- the primary difficulty being retained loyalty to albums and artists who played significant roles in my younger lives. Do I remember my erstwhile passion and include them in this numbering? I will not include the Monkees or other Bubble Gum masters from my childhood. But what about my angst-filled teen years when Gordon Lightfoot kept me sane?

So, with that wordy intro, my CURRENT favorites (and my picks may change by tomorrow:)

Al Stewart: Sparks of Ancient Light
Andrew Bird: Soldier On
Hillery Hahn: Bach Partitas and Sonatas
Bob Dylan: Gts. Hits Vol 2
Brian McNeill: At the Back of the North Wind(I went hiking in Scotland a couple of years ago, AND I'm a history buff--
see Al Stewart above)
Coldplay: Viva la Vida
Gabrielle Montero: Spontaneous Combustion
Jackson Browne: The Next Voice You Hear
Jesse Winchester: Live from Mountain Stage
Patricia Barber: Mythologies
Simon & Garfunkel: Concert in Central Park
Sting: Brand New "Day

Yes, I know this is 12 not 10. Hey! I do my best!

TEN!! We are only allowed 10?! :D

Can I have 12 like Gina did? hehe

1) Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left

2) U2 - The Joshua Tree

3) Metallica - Ride The Lightning

4) The Beatles - Abbey Road

5) David Bowie - Diamond Dogs

6) The Chemical Brothers - Best of

7) Paul Simon - Graceland

8) Bob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde

9) Ry Cooder - Get Rhythm

10) Gladys Knight and the Pips - Mowtown Years

11) Biffy Clyro - Blackened Sky

12) Deadmau5 - For Lack Of A Better Name

(Like everyone else, it's always changing)

How good is that? - I already knew that an '8' next to a ')' makes a 'cool emoticon'
- but I haven't put this list in any particular order, and still it landed on Mr 8) himself

I've spent days thinking about this. It was so hard to make a choice.
I like and listen to so many different albums and artists; depending on my mood and what I'm doing.
For housework it has to be The Kinks, The Who, T Rex or even Fine Young Cannibals.
For driving fast, The Pogues or Meatloaf.
Summer time: The Beach boys or my Reggae Compilation
My 'STAX' compilation my sister made up for me (Otis Reading, Sam & Dave, Booker T etc.) has to have a mention but didn't make the list.

I've been really greedy mentioning all these artists but I've been around a long time and every decade throws up new brilliant artists but all those I've chosen have been around a long time and deservedly so.

I finally came up with these:

Cat Stephens (Yusuf) Teaser and the Firecat
Paul Simon...............Graceland
Bob Dylan................Blood on the Tracks
UB40.....................Who You Fighting For
David Gray..............Life In Slow Motion
Bruce Springstein......Can't decide between Born in the USA or The Seager Sessions: We Shall Overcome
Johnny Cash............When The Man Comes Around
Van Morrison...........Down the Road
Rolling Stones .........40 Licks
Travelling Wilburys....Vol.1

Twelve all time favourites - not particularly in order (I believe in 12 rather then 10 - it's sacred measure versus metric!):

Forever Changes (Love)
Five Leaves Left (Nick Drake)
Smile (Brian Wilson)
Hangman's Beautiful Daughter (Incredible String Band)
Revolver (Beatles)
Odessey and Oracle (Zombies)
Fully Qualified Survivor (Michael Chapman)
Blonde on Blonde (Dylan)
Baltimore (Nina Simone)
Paris 1919 (John Cale)
Hunky Dory (Bowie)
Born to Run (Springsteen)

If pushed for all-time favourite - "Forever Changes". I'm assuming that we leave Leonard (and by association) Anjani out, here.

The Beatles - Abbey Road
The Beatles - The Beatles
The Beatles - Revolver
Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
Neil Young - Harvest
Man Man - Six Demon Bag
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Bob Dylan - Unplugged
Eric Clapton - Slowhand
Kris Kristofferson - Kristofferson

These are not in any particular order. I left off best-of compilations, as I consider them cheating (I stretched it a bit with Dylan Unplugged, but that would be classified as a live album).

I had a really hard time doing this without Cohen. Some of his that would be in the mix for my top ten faves would be:

Songs of Leonard Cohen
Songs of Love and Hate
New Skin for the Old Ceremony
I'm Your Man
The Future

Ok, I just found this thread ! My tastes run toward Lightning's! We should get together for a drink and a listen sometime ! ... I've got 1000's of recordings, including beaucoup compilations of jazz, blues, bluegrass & women's music, Dylan radio shows, etc., but here are a few of my faves by individual artists. These are albums & artists I've listened to for years and never grown tired of.

Bobby McFerrin--Medicine Music
Albert King--I Will Play the Blues for You
Ali Farka Toure with Ry Cooder--Talking Timbuktu

invented the 5-bar, 4 space method of writing down music notes on paper)

Marianne Faithfull--The Island Recordings
Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Loudon & Rufus Wainright, et al--The McGarrigle Hour

(I can't listen to Beethoven performed by anybody else except Solti & Ashkenazy)
