Re: Music You're Listening To
I'd like to recommend much of Bjork, including the recent (very 'dark') album, Vulnicura, and earlier CDs such as Verspertine and Homogenic.
Although the instrumentation design is quite different, in atmosphere I find this area of Bjork's work to be quite closely akin to albums such as 'Songs from a Room' and 'Songs of Love and Hate'.

Not exactly music, but I am currently immersed in Richard Burton bringing "The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" to life.

These two songs always brings back memories of crossing the country on the 10 through the section of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas.
Driving alone, looking for good country stations on the dial...
"May the wind take your troubles away..."
https://youtu.be/ZNTQ2DuJKtU
...I used to play this as I drove through Louisiana...
"I think I'll stop off here in Lafayette
Lord and have me another round"

Re: Music You're Listening To
I had only known of Iris Dement through her Tom Russell collaboration, but when I happened upon a review of her The Trackless Woods album, a musical interpretation of the poems of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, I ordered it on impulse. Glad I did!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4exw4NeMU0
From the liner notes:
Anna Akhmatova survived 30 years of Stalin, two world wars and the imprisonment and execution of many friends and loved ones. Her only child was sent to the Gulag two times for the crime of being Anna Akhmatova’s son. In 1946, accused of having a corrupting influence on Soviet youth, she was named an enemy of the state and banned from the writer’s union, thereby losing the small pension that’d been keeping her afloat. It was the kindness of friends that prevented a fall into abject poverty. While many of her peers were fleeing the country, she chose to stay and be a witness, using her poetry in service to the land and the people she loved.
Song About Songs
It will burn you at the start,
As if to breezes you were bare,
Then drop deep into your heart
Like a single salty tear.
And a heart full of spite
Will come to know regret
And this sorrow, although light,
It will not forget.
Others will reap, I only sow.
Of course! When the triumphant
scythers lay the grain low,
Bless them, O Lord!
And so that I may lift
My eyes in thanks to You above,
Let me give the world a gift
More incorruptible than love.

Diane, that was very interesting, thanks for posting it!
I've just got this double album featuring some of Australia’s finest cellists playing the great cello tunes, from the classical elegance of Bach and Haydn to the romantic indulgence of Elgar, Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Saint-Saëns.
My album came from the Australian Broadcasting Commission https://shop.abc.net.au/products/va-cello-dreams-2cd
It's also available on i-Tunes https://itunes.apple.com/au/album/cello ... d688462920

I love Cello Music and I'm rather hooked at the moment on Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel (Mirror in the Mirror) on this album but as I also love the violin here's a rendition of it with that instrument -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8ZScAdV8qE
I actually think I prefer the deeper and richer timbre tone colour of the Cello for this song -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA0U22ZMVR0
Either way, it's so relaxing and mediative.

Not listening to these yet but soon...in addition to Leonard Cohen's new album.
Re: Music You're Listening To
Saw Beth Hart for the first time at a small venue in Chicago a couple of days back - she played two unreleased songs from Fire on the Floor, Love Gangster and No Place like Home. She said Love Gangster was inspired a Leonard Cohen quote from an interview. LC said something like "I am not some kind of a love gangster" (I did not catch her exact words..).
The concert itself was awesome - she performs at a very high level and the high point was when she sang two songs back to back for her sister who "did not make it.." - Skin followed by Sister Heroine. This was followed by a song for her husband, My California. Thanks to Joe Bonamassa for "discovering" and promoting her for the wider world including myself although she has been making great records for 20 years for the musical cognoscenti !
She is a unique personality on stage and I highly recommend her concerts - this analogy may not do either of them justice but the closest I can think of is if John Hiatt was a white female blues singer who wrote songs like John Hiatt - that would be Beth Hart !

Lorde is my current musical crush.
After viewing her last night's Glastonbury set I googled two names together - voila:

But I want to be Paul Simon.” She thumps her hands down hard on the table. “I want to be Leonard Cohen.” (Thump.) “I want to be Joni.” (Thump.) “Fucking.” (Thump.) “Mitchell.” (Thump.) “And that takes time.”
