Slava sits with Dmitri
[Interview with Mstislav Rostropovich]

One day Shostakovich rang me and asked:
Slava can you come over to see me now?

He lived a fair way out.
I drove directly to him.

He passed me a chair and sat down opposite.
Suddenly he sat down and said:
Slava, let us be silent.

And so, we sat in silence.
For me, a young man, that wasn’t easy.

I lost track of time,
so I cannot say how long
we sat beside each other.

Then suddenly Shostakovich stood up
and shook my hand and said:
Thank you, Slava, my heart feels lighter now.

Then I drove home.

That was the way he wanted to be.
With people he trusted.
Oh bless the continuous stutter
of the word being made into flesh
