Re: Master Song

Shades of the movie "Fight Club." Next time I watch it I'll have to keep "Master Song" in mind to see how well one informs the other (or will it be the other way round?) By the time I got to the end of Beautiful Losers I was unsure if the book had 3 protagonists, 2, or only 1. A ...

Re: What to do with the Politics?

Thanks for noticing the disparate attention these threads receive. For my part (and I humbly acknowledge I have not been a member for very long) I bow to whatever you think best.

Re: Master Song

Hydriot, Yes, your idea definitely works! I hadn't considered this angle, and in typical Cohen lyric fashion, I do not think your suggestion rules out others -- but, particularly since this is the author who gave us "Beautiful Losers" I think that Cohen is definitely exploiting an ambiguit...

Re: Late Discovers of Mr. Cohen

Join the club. I did. Late as well. I was aware that I was hearing a common voice behind the words of a lot of songs I most enjoyed: Suzanne, (of course,) Dress Rehearsal Rag, So Long Marianne, , The Future. When I heard the umpteenth version of "Hallelujah!" I turned to my daughter and sa...

Re: Forum Friends Part II - Leonard at the Beacon

Wish I had made that concert. But Mabeanie1, I am trying to wrap my head around your description of the car mess back home. At what point did your neighbor's car stop? (I guess he didn't think to throw the car into neutral.) Was he driving one of these ill-fated Toyotas? Glad no one was hurt -- sorr...

Does your email generosity extend - - maybe -- - to me?

Re: Welcome to Purgatory - Population: 1

I know what you mean about unanswered questions, that always makes it harder. Of the handful of times I have had my heartbroken, it was always easier when I had answers or reasons so I could begin the process of closure. Anyways, I hope you feel better- you seem like a good guy from reading your po...

Re: Welcome to Purgatory - Population: 1

During what might have been a similar period in my life my progression did not so much involve losing the "loss" so much as accepting it. I have a room in my head for preschool memories; another room for this trip or that book, and I have a room for the pain I endured once because this guy...

Re: Welcome to Purgatory - Population: 1

I enjoyed (is that the right word? maybe "appreciated" "grocked"?) your poem. I've been there once upon a time. And I thought I'd never escape, but . . . here I am. If there was a map out of the mazed trap I would send the diagrams and directions. But, as you doubtless know, each...

Re: What would you cook for Leonard?

It's all your fault! (Hows that for avoiding personal responsibility?) During the weeks of being a good patient and dutifully propping my cast up on a cushion (above the level of the heart) and barely moving for hours on end, (instead of walking my usual 5 - 10 miles a day) and, needless to say, rel...

Re: The Master's Tools

An interesting post "Alsiony. In my (not so) humble opinion, when one is true to oneself on paper, that truth will be apparent to any who read. Though the corollary is also: that if one is gifted at fooling oneself, then one may be unable to connect with the future reader.

Re: The meaning behind of 5th verse of Hallelujah

An added power from the David and Bathsheeba reference comes from the fact that David, our paragon psalmist, was a weak and guilty man -- and aren't we all! All we can sing are broken and cold hallelujahs - - but if David, publicly damaged and guilty goods that he was, can offer acceptable praise, t...

Re: What would you cook for Leonard?

Susy, My favorite hiking agenda calls for me to hike somewhere near an isolated town in West Virginia -- Helvetia -- on a Sunday. Helvetia was settled by Swiss immigrants in the 1870s and still occupied by descendants. There is a delightful Bed and Breakfast there and the accompanying restaurant nam...

The main problem for you of course is the Celiacs. Can you get gluten free flour for baking, I know you can get it for bread. If you give it a go, let me know the results. Vicomtesse I chose a good time to be diagnosed. Most Americans are diagnosed at age 50, - I was diagnosed at 49 and since I'm i...
