Re: Filming at concerts

I confess I have been known to do it at Leonard's gigs and others, and part of me has noticed the 'remove' from the experience caused by it. ....I sometimes wish I had never started, and should just experience the gig 'in the moment'. Your quoted comments summarises why I find the experience of wat...

Re: Music You're Listening To

I've been listening to and enjoying the new solo album by the leadsinger of Glasgow's Phantom Band, sailing his own ship under the flag of Rick Redbeard. I think he has mentioned Leonard Cohen as an influence, though to me his songs bring Paul Simon and other arguably more traditional folk sounds to...

Re: The tour that never happened until it did

That last response sounds trite but the underlying principle is sound. I'm reminded that one of Leonard Cohen's favourite sayings is "The devil laughs when we make plans". I tend to avoid them myself.

Re: Are ticket prices too high?

...not to mention the fact that Cohen is about as old now as Sinatra when he performed his last concerts, and in relative terms the tickets are probably a lot cheaper.

Re: Are ticket prices too high?

I'm sorry to hear about Wilko - and astonished to hear of his "elated" response to being diagnosed as terminally ill. Long may that continue. As regards the punters and ticket prices, I guess it's a relatively "small beer" issue in the round, but I hope his best fans get to see his last tour without...

Re: Are ticket prices too high?

Funnily enough, in Daniel Kahneman's bestseller "Thinking, Fast and Slow" the sale and purchase of concert tickets is given as an example, along with wine collecting, of an area in which the "rational agent" model in economic theory explodes (or at least modified by prospect theory), because the val...

Re: Sad news - Wilko Johnson (Dr Feelgood)

From the tv documentaries I've seen about Dr Feelgood recently Wilko seems a lovely guy. He's also a great character of the guitar. I hope his final tour plans continue indefinitely.

Re: greatest hits - listeners vote - bbc radio 6

Which song of Leonard's released after 10 March 2002 should be favoured for a "100 songs of the decade" shortlist then? I was surprised that "Old Ideas" - I was umming and aahing whether it was called "Ten Old Songs" for a moment there ;-) - made so few of the "Best of 2012" lists of significance in...

Re: Who (or what) introduced you to Leonard Cohen?

I think I first heard Leonard Cohen in the late 70s when my younger brother's school friend insisted on playing an album by him on our home stereo. I was mainlining Buzzcocks, Joy Division and other punk and new wave at the time. The friend in question was known to be a fan of Dylan and obviously ha...

Re: the webb sisters

Thanks Mary for establishing my recollection wasn't false. I wish I had a recording of the performance. To the extent that I recall the intimacy of listening in on that recording, and I sadly don't have a phonographic memory, a live performance by Leonard in a big auditorium might afterwards feel la...

Re: the webb sisters

Songwriter, if my memory isn't false (and I must admit that it could be), the radio show in which Cohen first threatened to tour again about a year before he did (Was it the Norwegian programme about his relationship with Marianne?) featured LC performing a solo version of If It Be Your Will in an i...

Re: Dino Soldo not in the tour band

Now a "Bring back Julia and Perla!" campaign I could more readily understand..... not that I don't think the Webb sisters are both fabulous and fabulously English ;-) I've occasionally wondered why they were passed over (Did they decline? Too much history? The perceived cultural prejudice against th...

LC wearing a silver coloured bracelet

Was the cigarette holder his father's too? I only ask because those particular accoutrements seem more redolent of the swinging 20s than the swinging 60s - though they probably enjoyed something of a renaissance in the second wave.

Re: Analysis of "Memories"

I enjoyed that article a lot. Look forward to reading the section of Sylvie's book on the DOALM stage of Cohen's career with interest. I was lucky enough to have seen the Blackeyed Susans perform live on a couple of their only European live gigs. Well worth seeing if you are in Australia and get a c...
