Re: Happy Birthday, Leonard!

I first wished you a happy birthday 20 years ago. If this place or the internet then existed, I didn't know about it. You were exactly twice my age. The time lag is unaltered but the lifespan ratio is weakening. Reasons to be cheerful...Part 1. Happy birthday, old buddy....from a younger but older b...

Re: Leonard Birthday google doodle

21 September is the International Day Of Peace, so that's an uphill struggle given the climate of the times.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Day_of_Peace A combination of the two events could be forced by a suitably placed lyric....e.g. "The birds they sang at the break of day, start a...

Re: Leonard 80 years: Fund Raising for our Hydra Bench

See numbered point 3 in the small print of Jarkko's announcement above.....or, in an alternative universe, mine's a pint (of Guinness).

Re: *No Way To Say Goodbye' sung at Peaches Geldof's funeral

Having looked at the order of service in that press article Cohen's song was in good company. It sounds like it would have been a moving funeral service and fitting tribute.

Re: How to celebrate Leonard's 80th birthday

The relevant legal permission or permissions will be the key, but I expect design and proposed location drawings will be required by the authorities as part of the approval process to accompany the application forms. So on this occasion there is a cart to put before the horse. There is probably also...

Re: How to celebrate Leonard's 80th birthday

Just to make sure alternatives are given due consideration ("Came so far for beauty" is suitably brief and more clearly synonymous with LC but I'm thinking of the impact for the "stranger" bench sitter of the words in the moment at the place): Summer Haiku Silence and a deeper silence when the crick...

How to celebrate Leonard's 80th birthday

Mmmm...the chase is over, and less fascinating it has proved to be.....I'd like to be able to claim the poem I was looking for was "The beach at kamini" in Book of Longing but, truth to be told, it was actually "The Moon" - possibly based on a connection suggested by the Hydra poem Jarkko mentions u...

How to celebrate Leonard's 80th birthday

An inscribed bench on Hydra sounds like a fine notion. I've been trying to locate in "Stranger Music" a poem obviously set on Hydra I may have just imagined exists, but, whether connected to Hydra or not, any stanza from "Song to make me still" has potential, as do "Summer Haiku" "Owning Everything"...

How about an engraved fixed guitar installation placed against that tree at Douskos taverna on Hydra? http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/73/0f/f8/730ff8ac7bf1dd6acf3e5caf2cc7c053.jpg http://www.leonardcohenfiles.com/myguitar.JPG http://media-cache-cd0.pinimg.com/736x/75/fe/54/75fe5482b773d42a6dc...

A leaning tower of cigarettes.....erected at Parc du Portugal Drive.

That's a joke of course, and an adapted one at that. As you can tell, I'm short on ideas but long on enthusiasm.

Re: Fan Thoughts on "Show Me The Place"

It occurred to me randomly this morning, as things do, that the inspiration for the line "show me the place" from Cohen's song could be an adaptation of the famous line from Doubting Thomas about claims of Jesus' resurrection: But he said unto them, "Except I shall see in his hands the print of the ...

Re: Singing priest's Hallelujah wows wedding guests

It doesn't matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah I think I've now heard the holy version.... ...and, whilst the devil might not have all the best tunes, a broken lyric still has the upperhand for me. It's a heartwarming performance and that priest certainly hits notes where other...

That video captures a suitably discomforting performance of a suitably discomforting song. Thanks for posting it.

Angel Olsen

The song "White Fire" from upcoming singer songwriter Angel Olsen's new LP "Burn Your Fire For No Witness" has drawn comparisons in the press with early Cohen material. I thought the same when I first heard it, though the song still stands on its own two feet. You can listen to the song and form you...

Re: Leonard Cohen on TV in Australia?

Thanks for this, though I take it that Geoffrey Rush is neither a fan of: (a) Leonard Cohen; or (b) Robin Hood Who is Mary Ann? An American pretender is my best guess. I would also assume that back in the 60s Cohen looked slightly younger than he did by the 1980s, which is roughly where the cartoon ...
