Re: never-ending gallery

I will go out on a limb and theorize that any form of exhibition--creation of art or writing or even posting on this forum--is at least in part meant to give the viewer or reader a desired impression of the work's creator. Maybe I've written a poem with such perfect words and flow that I believe it ...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Bev, thanks for the link. I watched the entire video (except I admit to fast-forwarding through "Jazz Police"). A very good short concert, I liked seeing the old band members who I had never seen in concert plus a young Bob Metzger. Leonard singing and playing his guitar for "If it be Your Will" was...

Re: never-ending gallery

Geoffrey, you have created a place where I can go whenever I start thinking too highly of myself and see all of the artistic talents I completely lack. Interesting writing and artwork was quite enough, now you are shaming me with your musical abilities. Where does this end? Have you any sculptures t...

Re: never-ending gallery

Optimism, yes, almost always the best frame of mind to maintain. Without optimism we are left only with waiting for the miracle, and miracle's odds are always slim. Hope you can venture out before your rice and corned beef are gone, and that your stock includes pizza ingredients (round or square is ...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

It seems Leonard appeared on "Austin City Limits" twice, once in 1988 and once in 1993. The 1988 performance is available on youtube, but for some reason the 1993 performance is not. Bev, do you know if a video of the 1993 ACL performance is available anywhere? Emmanuel, if you have any recollection...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Emmanuel,

I just discovered that if you do not exit the video when it ends, a different version pops up of Cohen's performance of your father's song at Colisee Pepsi. And if you do not exit that video at the end, an audio of your father singing the song in 1966 pops up.

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Emmanuel,

Here is a video of the first time Cohen sang your father's "La complainte de la Manic" in concert, at Centre Bell 11/29/12:

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Emmanuel, how nice to leave the kind message from your family. Leonard Cohen only performed his interpretation of "La complainte de la Manic" several times, most if not all, in Canadian concerts (although maybe he included it in a Paris concert as well). I was lucky enough to see and hear his perfor...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Poor Dave, to be expected to live up to the reputation of a notorious life-long womanizer--or to put it more delicately and in line with the theme of the song--aficionado of the fairer sex. I was browsing through the last section of "The Flame," and it struck me how many of Leonard's notebook entrie...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Hi Lisa, Thanks for your post and the link to Hartmut's posts. Your explanations about "The Night in Santiago" shed a lot of light on the background of the poem/song. For some reason I enjoy the song more in that context rather than viewing it as Leonard's remembrance of a personal conquest. In work...

Re: Some resources on “The Night of Santiago”

Hartmut, thanks for the links, I was not aware of the connection to Lorca's poem. Interesting that one of my favorite lines that I cited earlier, "Though I've forgotten half my life, I still remember this" does not seem to appear in Lorca's poem and was evidently Leonard's addition.

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

Hi Vickie, Yes maybe this will be the kickoff to discussing the final albums, especially "Thanks for the Dance." Re Kelley Lynch, I never intended to give her any praise, or even notoriety, But I continue to feel that, absent her nefarious deeds, Leonard's fans might have seen more of his work in te...

Re: Along the way... Discovering Leonard's albums

"The Inadvertent Gifts--Part 2" This essay deals with how the misappropriation of Leonard's assets by Kelley Lynch ultimately provided inadvertent gifts to his fans. Part 1 spoke about the concert performances--371 in all--that Leonard wound up playing after he was forced out of retirement. This par...

Re: LC's songs in Australian bushfires benefit concert

Hi Bev, we are praying for fire relief for Aussie's weary people and critters and hope you are safe. Glad you posted about Leonard's gracious fire relief gift ten years ago, I had forgotten about that kind gesture. Looked up Stewart D'Arrietta, his will be an interesting performance to say the least...
