Re: Leonard 80 years: Fund Raising for our Hydra Bench

I know quite a bit about controlling cat populations through my work with a local animal shelter. In many, many places a strategy called TNR (trap/neuter/return) is employed. Through TNR, volunteers trap feral cats, animal organizations perform spay/neuter surgeries, and the cats are returned to whe...

Re: Happy Birthday, Jarkko

Jarkko, happy birthday! Your fascination with the music and writings of Leonard Cohen has permitted thousands to discover/rediscover that body of work, and it played an important role in Cohen's decision to continue providing enjoyment to his fans these past years. We are all grateful that you pursu...

Re: Sightseeing Tour of Cohen's Montreal?

Coincidentally, we just returned from a short (first) visit to Montreal. It is a lovely city, you will certainly like it. Regarding the sights already mentioned, we saw them all except the "tea and oranges" cafe. If you visit LC's present home, consider lunch at nearby Schwartz's where you can get e...

Re: Leonard 80 years: Fund Raising for our Hydra Bench

I too am in favor of some/all of our excess monies going to HydraArk. I know from personal experience how difficult it is for animal shelters to raise funds, especially in the present economic climate and with so many competing humanity-based charities competing for assistance. A few thousand dollar...

Tips Regarding Montreal Visit

Fellow fans, We are planning a first-time visit to Montreal in August. Not only will we get to see a city we have always wanted to visit, we will get a sense of the city LC grew up in and see a few LC-related sites. My question--I guess directed towards residents--is, can anyone recommend any B&Bs o...

Re: New Books 2014

I've been reading "So Long Marianne A Love Story," and at the end of the chapter recounting Marianne's husband Axel's sad decline, the author says, "It had been a long way to the bottom. Or, as Leonard Cohen would later write: Yes it's come to this, and wasn't it a long way down." Dress Rehearsal Ra...

Re: Where is our 2016 Event??

Someone mentioned here that Dublin event sign-ups are lower than expected. That's sad, but I think partially due to what Harald alluded, when there is or may be another tour coming, some fans will be reticent about depleting funds to attend an "event," funds they may prefer to spend to see concerts....

Re: Rob Hallett exits AEG Live

Hallet stepped up when no one else would, I am grateful for that, no matter how much money he ultimately made. Making money in honest endeavors is still (I think?) acceptable. The price of anything, including concert tickets, is governed by the supply/demand function in free market societies. No one...

Re: Rob Hallett exits AEG Live

If Sylvie Simmons' book is accurate, Rob Hallet's involvement with LC's decision to tour again was quite a bit more than a simple business decision; it was a risk of money and reputation that few others--likely no others--were willing to undertake. This quote is from page 481 of her fine book, which...

Re: How to celebrate Leonard's 80th birthday

For the inscription I nominate:

Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

Not only does this quote characterize Leonard's life, I believe that these lines directly refer to Hydra.

Re: How to celebrate Leonard's 80th birthday

If we are going with the bench idea, I believe that an engraved stone bench would be far preferable to a wooden bench due to durability and resistance to vandalism. I see suppliers in the NE United States with granite products in the $500 range (not sure if this includes engraving), but obviously sh...

Re: How to celebrate Leonard's 80th birthday

An event in Montreal would be fitting, although attendance by European admirers would obviously be limited.

To those forum members living on the bottom of the world (I'm still not sure why you don't fall off), hope your leg of the 2013 tour is memorable, you've had a long wait.

Don't forget to provide some videos for us up here, we're still in the throes of withdrawal!
