Re: The Mystery of the LC 60's Acetate

Hello, Tom. I remember you and I think we did exchange PMs back in '03. Thanks for the info.

Re: The Mystery of the LC 60's Acetate

Hello. I just wandered over here and I see there has been a bit of interest in that acetate I stumbled across years ago. I don't have a satisfying solution to the "mystery," I'm afraid, but for what it's worth I can report that nothing has happened with the acetate -- I still have it; I ha...

Thank you, Tom. I'm going to assume that these recordings are from the '66 Vanguard demos, though it would be great if Mr. Cohen could confirm that. Asylum records was founded in 1970 by David Geffen (now a partner in Dreamworks SKG film studios--he's the "G"). So unless the Asylum Records...

Yes, Matjaz, that was a little surprising.

It certainly was never my intention to cause anyone grief by describing the contents of the record...

Hello again. I'll try to answer your questions about "all the BT's motives." First, I'm doing my best to preserve the record and the music on it. (Yes, Lizzytish, I taped the playthrough in case of disaster with the acetate.) Second, I don't think it is my place to distribute copies withou...

I once worked on the post-production of a movie, where I encountered sound editors using "n.g." to label things like broken equipment. Of course, it could mean something else entirely. If I'm right, I presume the use here is for technical reasons about the master, not any comment on the so...

The Leonard Cohen '60s acetate

Thanks for your interest in this. I was out of town much of the time since my earlier posts, hence my disappearance from the message board. I have since played the acetate, here's what I found: It is Leonard Cohen, on both sides of the record (side two is simply marked "n/g" in grease penc...

Sorry for disappearing--I was out of town for a substantial chunk of the time since my earlier posts. I have since played the acetate (once)--I'll create a new topic for my report.

I know a little about things like acetates because I used to be an active record collector, and I worked in a record store for a few years. But I'm not at all accustomed to handling acetates: most of the info in that post above was gleaned by searching around the internet--there are some record-coll...

Thanks for all of your comments and interest. About the acetate question --it looks like a vinyl record, but it is not the same. Acetates are made of an aluminum disc covered with lacquer. It's much heavier than a vinyl LP, and much more fragile (and flammable!). Acetates (anyone who knows more abou...

I've already ordered that replacement turntable belt!

Hope that fixes it. The thing failed today, just to spite me--it was working yesterday...

Thanks, Jarrko. That's exciting--I hope the disc really contains what the label says it does!

Does Leonard have any knowledge of the (two-record set?) that somebody booked at the mastering lab as asylum records would have been mastering?

I'll keep checking in here while I'm out of town, in case anyone has any insights into this thing, and I'll certainly let you all know whenever this is finally identified. Thanks already for your help.

Thanks very much, eeey. I wonder if they'd have a record of all their past masters...
