Thanks for the suggestion, Jarkko. I think I'll try some B&Bs and explore.

Lizzy, I'll pick you up at 3:00.

Things to do in Montreal

I'm planning to visit Montreal and Quebec in August and am looking for some ideas about places to visit for food and lodging and music, and places of interest. I'd like to actually experience the cities, rather than end up in the local Holiday Inn and Outback Steakhouse. Anyone have any suggestions?

Actually, I did vote, for muffins. I am not a pacifist, but I feel that to justify war requires that a set of conditions be met. All alternatives to resolve the situation peacefully must be exhausted first, the result of not going to war must be worse than the effects the war will produce, and the w...

Isobel, Powerful and provocative...Your use of these resonant brief phrases to capture the essence of the 20th Century really caught me. I am impressed and agree with you in your interpretation of our times. You could actually write a poem for each of your lines, then write another...but isn't that ...

Thanks to all for the encouragement and kind words. I think one of the reasons I like to come in here is that you folks appear to be kindred spirits, harkening me back to an earlier more hopeful time. I've never been able to divest myself of my youthful idealism, actually I've never tried. I reminds...

Children of the Renaissance

I was a child in seventy Just coming home from war, and free. I'd learned some truths, and lived some lies, and dreamed a dream we'd realize a generation of peace. I found some other children who were dreaming dreams of such things too. With youthful hopes, in love with love, we thought the world co...

Dear Lizzy, I don't think you should need to apologize for or denigrate anything you have to say. If this is a day you consider yourself less than fully cogent, then I'll be pleased to while away time with you in pleasant, scintillating conversation on any such day. The quote is from Tennyson's &quo...

I think there are a couple, at least, dynamics at work here. One is the ability to recognize the "cohen essence" in a lyric. It is like seeing someone you haven't seen for years, but you still recognize him immediately even though he might have gained weight, gone bald, and is wearing a be...

Ten New Songs

I just bought this album this week and I admit that I have been somewhat aprehensive, fearing it wouldn't be up to my hopes. I'm delighted. This is very good work. The melodies and lyrics have been playing inside me ever since I listened to them. The imagery in "Alexandra" is exquisite, &q...

Meeting Leonard

It was 1970, I was in Vietnam, in a little place not too far from the coastal town of Vung Tau, called Long Thanh. I had purchased an Akai reel to reel tape deck and went to a post exchange on another army base and found a recording called, "Songs from a Room" on a 7 inch reel (remember th...

I have to vote with Elizabeth. I think she has nailed the truth of this movement toward war. The Bush administration is dressing their plans in the garments of liberating the Iraqis and removing the threat to peace that Saddam represents. It seems to me that the USA is the biggest threat to peace in...
