Re: The Window

I know I haven't been around posting on the forum much lately, but Leonard and his music is never far from my thoughts. This morning I received an advertizement/email from from a company specializing in Judaica. One item they are offering, suggested as a gift for a kindergarten graduation, caught my...

For something just a little different...

I was just made aware of this version of Hallelujah. I believe the artist may be Israeli and this is done in either Ladino or Spanish, not sure which as they are both quite similar. Ladino is to Spanish what Yiddish is to German. It's quite lovely and give a new twist to very classic Leonard Cohen. ...

Re: Leonard Cohen Holiday Album?

Ok, let's put it this way. How would many Christians feel about some Christian musician doing an album of Pagan chants to the Goddess? This Jew finds a Leonard Cohen Xmas album that distasteful.

Re: "story of isaac"

Like so many of Leonard's songs, this one has many layers of meaning. The obvious is that it is a telling of the Biblical story of the sacrifice of Isaac. Another layer shows the cruelty and futility of war. It is also the competition/strife between father and child. Then there is the hidden meaning...

Re: Leonard Cohen Holiday Album?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please let's not cheapen this wonderful man by having him join the crowd with cheap commercialism in this way. As a Jew, I am sickened when people like Dylan, Streisand, Neil Diamond and other famous Jewish performers put out Xmas albums. It just cheapens both tr...

Re: Lines that get you every time

Lately I've had the following lines still going thru my head:

You who build these altars now
to sacrifice these children,
you must not do it anymore.
A scheme is not a vision
and you never have been tempted
by a demon or a god.

Re: Lines that get you every time

Lately, with all the insanity going on here in the US, especially the Islamaphobia that seems to be running rampant, I've been thinking of the song "Story of Isaac". The lines: A scheme is not a vision and you never have been tempted by a demon or a god. You who stand above them now, your ...

Re: Who By Fire

One school of thought feels that it should not be a part of this time. While it can be troubling, I find it very meaningful and stimulates the necessary reflection on ones life engendered by this time of year. Lili Do you mean that that school of thought says that you should contemplate that prayer...

Re: Who By Fire

Thanks Holydove. Unfortunately, something came up at the last minute and I was unable to make it to the discussion group. Of course, that doesn't keep me from the study of this beautiful and meaningful work. I'll have something more to offer on this topic between now and Yom Kippur, I'm sure. This i...

Re: Who By Fire

Shortly I am heading to my synagogue for a discussion of the poem that inspired this song. This is one of many events offered in preparation for the High Holy Days which will begin soon. This poem, unetaneh tokef, is such a vital part of this holiday cycle. Literally for centuries Jews have puzzled ...

Re: Famous Blue Raincoat....sung by LC or a woman??

Straying a bit from the topic/thread I started, I was thinking recently about my personal preference for Leonard singing his own songs, as opposed to the song being covered/performed by someone else. There is one striking exception to this preference of mine. The song "Nightingale"! While ...

Re: Favorite LC song RIGHT NOW

The song that has been playing in my head....and on my PC....lately is probably the only one of Leonard's songs that I actually prefer done by someone other than Leonard....Anjani's version of Nightingale from her Blue Alert album. The sad sweetness of that song, performed by Anjani, is very comfort...

Re: Famous Blue Raincoat....sung by LC or a woman??

Do you see "And end this night" as a reference to death? In answer to the above question, Ann, I would say, not necessarily. "And end this night" could be a reference to death, or it could simply be any of an infinite number of transitions, death being only one form of transitio...

Re: Famous Blue Raincoat....sung by LC or a woman??

TipperaryAnn Thanks for your comments. I agree that I prefer Leonard's version of "If it be your will" to any of the covers, including the one by the Webb Sisters. In fact, I was just listening to it a few minutes ago in my car as I ran an errand. That song in particular, brings forth an i...

Re: Clothing Time

Dr HGuy, I love that pic of Leonard on the tricycle. He was so cute back then. But even at...what? probably 3 or 4?.....he had way more class than those "wan lads" from the ads. LOL. As for Leonard in the cutoffs, well, he's always been a very sexy man. Like his voice, his sex appeal has m...
