Re: never-ending gallery

Hi Lisa, I have read the book and loved it. Much easier to "grasp" as a script that I had expected. And then ... the wonderful Postscript discussing the various sources that Frayn drew on to create this masterpiece. Thank you again for pointing me in its direction. I will read it again soon as I mu...

Re: never-ending dairy

Thank you Lisa for returning this forum to the competing artistic merits of different ice-creams. Leonard Cohen, known elsewhere as Mister Softee, will be highly pleased. Personally, I find Häagen-Dazs ice-creams to be too heavy -- I prefer a lighter consistency in my ice cream treats, a bit more o...

Re: Leonard and e e cummings

Thanks for this Lisa. I agree that all writers are - consciously or unconsciously - influenced by everything they read. And we know that Leonard was extremely well-read! I was just struck by the consonance of Suzanne and the cummings poem and wondered if anyone had uncovered any other examples ... ...

Re: Leonard and e e cummings

...I am still surprised that I can discover no formal research of the links between Cohen and cummings. Maybe someone should put this forward as a fit subject for a D. Lit. thesis ...? I suspect that the links are tenuous at best, and any formal research would uncover nothing more than a few words ...

Re: Copenhagen

Thank you again, Lisa. I have found the book on Amazon, but can I just check with you that it is written in novel form, rather than in script form. In my view scripts are meant to be performed by someone else for me to see and hear. ... I have also tracked down the DVD, but it is region 2 (UK) and ...

Re: never-ending gallery

...thank you Lisa. You are very welcome! As it turns out, I have just watched the BBC film version of Copenhagen (I managed to obtain a copy on DVD after mentioning it yesterday), and it is definitely worth seeking out. It has a rather different visual atmosphere compared to the austere set of the ...

Re: never-ending theory

... it's hard to know for sure ;-) https://youtu.be/OkVpMAbNOAo If you are truly interested in this sort of thing, one of the most fascinating plays I ever saw was "Copenhagen" by Michael Frayn, which provides an account of a meeting between Werner Heisenberg and Niels Bohr in 1941. I absolutely lo...

Re: Which Notebooks Did Leonard Cohen Use?

Here's one of Leonard's later notebooks, dated from 2011, clearly displaying the brand "Writersblok" at the bottom of the page (an upgrade from those little spiral bound memo pads!).

An easy way to remember is to think of the word "opinionated" -- it is usually not a compliment! ;-)

P.S. (philosophically speaking...)

Despite the clear advantages to using the Socratic Method (and I highly recommend that everyone ought to try it from time to time, testing some of their beliefs to see if they have a firm foundation of logic and rationality, and not accepting things without question), I am also very much open to ano...

Hi "4" -- thanks for responding to Geoffrey's challenge! ...Lisa, please assuage my writer's ego and tell me it took a bit of effort to compose your post!... Well, I suppose that I have an advantage in that I've been thinking about and writing about this sort of thing for years, so it didn't really ...

Re: never-ending enquiry

...as you know, einstein irrefutably established that time and space are inseparably connected, making it logical to believe that before the 'big bang', or before galaxies began racing away from each other, producing the concept of 'time' - there must have existed a creative force (god/mystery) in ...

Re: never-ending philosophy

...from one of stephen scobie's old books... I am not familiar with that book. Is that a letter that you wrote to Leonard? Why do you think that "God" has anything to do with it? If I notice the cruelty in the world, and the often tragic impermanence of the most beautiful things, it only seems to c...

Re: never-ending gallery

"the reason i've stayed away from other people's material is mostly because i couldn't really learn the tunes of other songs. i would love to sing them, and if i could really sing well i'd sing everybody's songs, but i feel if i sing my own songs nobody can complain." When I saw Leonard in concert ...
