Re: Marianne's son
Nick Broomfield's documentary Marianne and Leonard: Words of Love proved to be much better than I expected, not a saccharine paean like so many previous works, but a hard-hitting critique which revealed in passing who really suffered from the selfishness of the Beautiful Losers: the children. I arri...

Re: Round Island Trip
Ask him. I went twice in 2018, and each time there were about two dozen people aboard, which is the right number as you can socialise without feeling cramped.

Round Island Trip
Back in the nineties you coould go round the island on a caique. It was rough and ready (no food) but fun. Then the service stopped. For years I muttered to anyone who would listen that there was money to be made by a skipper who had the gumption to organise it again. Finally, last year, my lobbying...

Re: Bench updates
The real problem is the lack of shade. I have seen people sitting on the nearby ordinary wooden bench rather than on Leonard's simply because the former is shady. The bench is north facing, so a tree planted behind it would really help.

Greek strikes
The island has just emerged from four days of isolation due to a prolonged General Strike in which no Flying Dolphins ran. If this should happen to any of you, there is now a €7 service four times a day from Ermioni to the island. Ermioni is on the mainland northwest of the island. It can be reached...

Re: Bench updates
Lakis reports: "The Office has informed them that the original plan will not be accepted because there are no similar objects on the island."
This is untrue. There are two maybe three similar stone benches (albeit linear) on the road to Mandraki.

Re: Where to eat on Hydra
Every-one has their favourite of course (and I won't mention mine) but I also like Psaropoulos which moved last year from the front to overlooking the port on the far west side. I particularly recommend their seafood salad. Crypto Limani (The Secret Harbour) is tiny but much appreciated by locals: o...

Re: Hydra is ready for us
For those unaware, the Roloi (where I am typing this right now) was Katsika's grocery store. The doorway was where Leonard first invited Marianne to join his table.

Re: Bench updates
I am on the island now and there is no sign of anything happening. Just two days of General Strike and rain.

Re: Travel Hints to Hydra
The aerial view is very helpful, but here are some further points. The X96 bus approaches from the bottom right hand corner of the aerial view. Rather than getting off at E, there is a stop alongside a very imposing Byzantine style building which looks like a cathedral but which I think is a museum....

Re: Leonard Cohen's health
Here's a cautionary tale for you all. When Leonard started touring again in 2008, at the end of each concert, that year and the following years, I would wonder sadly if it was to be the last time I heard him live, if death would intervene between us. I was right to fear that death would come between...

Re: New album, new concert?
I really think his admirers should now allow Leonard to retire from public life. He doesn't have any obligation to entertain us. We are incredibly lucky to have this huge back catalogue to sustain us all for decades. That should be enough for us.

Re: Bench updates
I am on the island now, and sad that there is still no sign of the bench. It is intriguing, isn't it, that mayors who in Greece have dictatorial powers don't actually have the discretion to site a bench on one of their paths without the involvement of a pantheon of bureaucrats. I suspect someone som...

Re: Sad news: Marianne Ihlen dies
What I remember of her on Hydra in the sixties was her elegance: she wore a long light skirt that swished around her ankles, years before long skirts became fashionable. She had the deportment of an ice-skater: she seemed to not walk but glide across the stones of the quayside. I was only a teenager...

Re: Store room
What I really want to hear is Leonard singing Priests. I gather there was a recording of it long ago, apparently now lost. I've only ever heard it sung by Judy Collins.
