Cohen's Poetry: Better Read or Sung?

I'm working on a paper for a class I am in and am very interested in having some fan input. The topic covers Cohen's poetry and asks: Is Cohens poetry more powerful when it is sung or read? I hope you can offer some personal insights and thanks in advance for your input!
