I have been searching for this book but it seems unavailable everywhere. Does anyone know where I could find a copy?

I read this a few years ago. It focuses on the novels and poetry, as you might expect, though the music does come up in the end. I had high hopes for it, as I'm keen on both of these lyric Canadians' work and was interested in how Ondaatje analysed another writer, but I admit finding it a bit stiff. (When I took a lit class from him in 1990, he was much more relaxed, with an abiding interest in technique and voice.) That said, it's not a long book and worth a look.

I think that was Ondaatje's first book when he moved to Canada (from Sri Lanka)... Maybe he already did publish, I think, Billy the Kid, but not the novels, he was far from his later fame.

I found a copy of this book in a 'brocante' – second hand store – in the middle of rural France some twelve years ago. I have Ondaatjes signature, he came to the Kilkenny Arts Festival in 1989 or 1990. The signature is on a book of his poetry, The Cinnamon Peeler though, not the LC book. I have read all his novels except his latest Divisadero and found Anils Ghost one of the most exceptional books I have read despite the slightly gruesome undercurrent.

Hi there. Can I have my book back? I was just thinking this morning about the four white violets Leonard put in the buttonhole of some woman's sweater and now I'm wishing I had Michael Ondaatje's book to read the part about those lines.

:)
When you get it back Abby, can you tell us what it says about those lines.
That is one of my all time favourite poems for very sentimental reasons.

Hi Cate. I received the book back today (with snacks! all of it from Japan! so quickly and so kindly!). This is what Michael Ondaatje wrote about Song[/i:

"And almost as if forgetting to say his prayers, Cohen writes:
I almost went to bed
without remembering
the four white violets
I put in the button-hole
of your green sweater."

That's it. Whopping, earth-shattering, one sentence. It rocked my world, though. I hope it rocks yours too :)

and how i kissed you then
and you kissed me
shy as though I’d
never been your lover
"And almost as if forgetting to say his prayers, Cohen writes:
yes, it is like a prayer isn't it.
It's such a simple poem but just aches inside of you.

Thank you Abby, I hope you enjoy your book and your treats!
