Sounds like you and I should get together, Margaret. It's very rarely that I allow myself to be dragged out to a party, and I would almost certainly be in one of the other corners, trying to blend into the background. I have to be very careful what I say on here, because I simply could not take the sort of flak that our more confident members seem to thrive on. By the time I have thought twice about what I want to say, someone else has usually said it for me.

Hi Margaret and Linmag,
I think there are three of us now!
I really can understand you, and I often feel just like you!

Hi Tom, Elizabeth and Georges and Shwmae John,
Thank you for all your kind words!
It's wonderful to get such nice welcomes! :)

Elizabeth, it seems Leonard's 'Suzanne' has had quite an impact on your life too!
I remember that I heard this song on BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Service), the radio station I was frequently tuned to at that time. I taped it at once, and I still have that tape.
But Leonard can be seen quite often on German TV too. During the '80s he had several appearances in TV shows to introduce his new albums, and in the '90s TV portraits both on Leonard's pre-MB biography and on his life at the Zen centre on Mount Baldy were shown. Last December the docu 'Beautiful Losers' was repeated.
There are articles in magazines, too, every now and then.
Just the other day my father found - even for the second time - a question about Leonard and 'Suzanne' in a crossword puzzle.
So, fortunately, Leonard is quite present in the media over here.

John, that song has always remained one of my favourites too.
BTW How do you pronounce 'shwmae'?
Do you speak Welsh fluently? This language must be very hard to learn!
15 years ago I tried to learn a little Irish but, sorry to say, I forgot most of it. Welsh looks even more difficult!

Georges, do you speak Irish, or is there no Gaeltacht in Northern Ireland?

Tom, where do you come from?

Hope I'm not too curious?!

Just an aside, Margaret. I'm usually the one off in a quiet area or corner, talking one-on-one with someone [always my preference to everyone talking at once, which tends to get chaotic and loud sometimes ~ from my perspective, anyway], but not the one I came with, as I generally go alone. If a party must be, the quiet ones, and the quieter people there, are more often the ones of interest to me and my preference. I like real conversation over the party-style one-liners that so often fill the air at many parties. However, I won't hesitate to laugh when I hear something witty.

I wondered why you hadn't been posting, but honestly figured it was more Laos- than Forum-related. I'm sorry to see that. I've always enjoyed your posts.

Dear Linmag ~

"By the time I have thought twice about what I want to say, someone else has usually said it for me" ~ and this from the one I was referring to from Sony's Board.

And Margaret's, "It took me a long time reading all the threads for weeks or months before I put my first post in. Very often someone has already said exactly what I felt so it seems pointless to come in just to say 'yes, me too' " ~ you shared in the first part with her, but certainly proved the second part to be wrong......as I know she does, too, when she posts. "Get back in here, Margaret :) :!: "

Love, Elizabeth

Dear Susanne ~

Yes, Suzanne is like your first love, whom you never will forget......and who brings back all those original feelings. I was so stunned at the time, the same as you were ~ and how wonderful that you still have that original tape!

I'm very curious as to your comment [italics mine], "During the '80s he had several appearances in TV shows to introduce his new albums...." What kind of TV shows was he in? Do you mean a cameo appearance? With some of his music? Please explain that, if you would. Thanks.

Susanne

Welsh is a very guttural (sp) language which, alas, I do not speak very well (but I am learning)

Shwmae is pronounced as the "Sho" from should followed by My with the stress on the last syllable (I suppose I should learn phonetics) I also started learning Irish Gaelic (Gaelfinn?) 19 years ago but had to give up as I'm not a linguist (But I have been called cunning   )

I wish LC was such a media celebrity in the UK as he he obviouslly is in Germany.

(BTW In German Crosswords does the double S count as a single or a double letter - In Welsh crosswords some of the double letters count as single  so I stick to english)

Margaret - I've read a few of your previous posts and have enjoyed what I've read so please post more - I'd hate to think that my arrival would coincide with anyones departure (I know they are not related)

JTS (Back in work tomorrow :( so my posting will decrease for the rest of the week)

thank you to everyone for your words of encouragement. I will make an effort to contribute more often in future.

Elizabeth, my recent travels have not done me any real harm. To be honest I didn't actually feel I was in any danger at the time I was in Laos. 99.9% of the holiday was filled with memorable experiences, incredible scenary and wonderfull warm Lao people who seemed to be always laughing and giggling. The scariest moment for me was being covered in soap having a shower and discovering a gigantic cockroach running around my feet. I screamed and crashed about blindly while it also did the same until meeting its fate under my husbands heavy- duty sandal!

Is it just me or did this thread not have the desired effect?

Yes, it has had the desired effect , there's no stopping me now, I'm on a roll.

Just to show there was no sexism, when my husband encountered the slightly smaller mate of the big cockroach shortly after, this was also dispatched with my own smaller heavy-duty sandal.

And.....true story......I recently crashed to the ground and ended up going to ER for x-rays, suspecting a broken knee, whilst trying to save the life of a palmetto bug [a form of cockroach, but not one that hangs out due to dirt, more of an outsider that loves damp leaves, etc.] by taking him to a safer location than the laundromat floor or the concrete parking lot outside it ~ and in the relative darkness tripped over a concrete, lane divider. Spotting where the bug had propelled to, approx 15 feet ahead of me, I picked myself up and went to pick him up [might as well follow through on my mission], only to discover he had been dead, already. Further details would clarify some of your questions, but that's the overall of it. Now, a month later, the soft-tissue damage/multiple contusions around my knee are still not quite healed. I can only conclude I must have been a Hindu in a former life.....or a bug  .

Susanne,
I won't say you're too curious. Most of your questions will be answered in due time.
Maybe you'll have to wait until after the war at five o'clock with some.

Elizabeth,
Thanks for your interest! :)
Unfortunately I didn't have a video recorder yet in the '80s!
But I can remember that Leonard appeared on "Wetten, dass ... ?" in 1985, an entertainment show featuring unusual bets, international talk guests and music. He sang 'Hallelujah' - a great performance!
In 1988 Leonard introduced 'First We Take Manhattan' on a music/talk show programme. Again, he was wonderful, of course, and also so sweet and touching, as he - apparently suffering from a conjunctivitis - was drying his eye with a handkerchief while he was singing!
That year one of his "I'm Your Man" concerts (10 April 1988, Cologne) was broadcast live on the radio.

John,
Thanks for your explanations! Very interesting! :)
I'm not sure but I think Irish Gaelic is 'Gaeilge'.

Tom,
I'll be waiting patiently ...

With regard to the topic of this thread, I would encourage non-posters to join, contribute and enjoy this forum, which I feel brings out the best in its members. What's more, I believe this forum truly reflects the spirit of both LC and Jarkko (our moderator), whom I feel - in their own individual way - abound in good will, generosity and graciousness. :D

I cannot say the same for another forum - which will remain nameless - where I have witnessed fairly regular vindictive argumentativeness, derision, belittling and abuse. Admittedly, some of this appears to be "tongue in cheek" - nevertheless, it is not always easy to differentiate between this style and something more malicious. :? So, consequently, I have felt far more concerned and daunted about posting in that forum! By contrast, I feel the tone of this forum is both healthy and happy - it strikes a nice balance between serious discussion and more light-hearted banter or fun. Because of this, I strongly support it and so encourage those on the sideline to join in!

Cheers

Hi Darby ~

I know the Forum of which you speak, and opted to not join in there for the same reasons. Watching it from the sidelines for a short time was painful enough, as I watched people tear each other to shreds. For anyone who thinks it's bad here.......
