"Fugitive Pieces" a movie based on the book of the same name by Canadian author Anne Michaels, will be the opening night gala at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. It is directed by Jeremy Podeswa (also Canadian) and the "Hydra Consultant" listed in the Imdb credits - is my old friend Brian Sidaway. They shot for 11 days on Hydra - and the line producer, Sandra Cunningham is also afriend (we introduced her to Brian) - Can't wait to see it.

I second Demetris for his preference in "Girl in black". Charismatic actors (Elli Lambeti and Demetris Chorn were a couple at that time), beautiful setting and evocative direction by Michalis Kakogiannis. You can recognise many familiar buildings, even the barrels in the harbour that LC posed nearby!

Image

"Phaedra" is great too, with Melina Merkouri as Phaedra(she adored this role!) and Antony Perkins as Ippolytos. Melina Merkouri had asked Mikis Theodorakis to write a very emotive and passionate love song for this movie and he wrote "Agapi mou", one of the most lyrical songs by Theodorakis.

Image

"Boy on a dolphin"; what else except that Sophia Loren was only 23 and extremely beautiful on Hydra's setting!

Image

There are several Greek movies that were shot on Hydra, I think the first one is "Marina" in 1947,directed by Alekos Sakellarios.

There is also a 1988 British TV (Yorkshire Television) movie entitled "Out of the Shadows" starring Charles Dance and Alexandra Paul which was shot on location in Athens and Hydra - several private houses on Hydra were used as a hotel and several residents' domiciles. There are some gorgeous shots of Hydra in it; both interior and exterior - though most of the story takes place in Athens. It has been shown several times on U.S. television. (The movie was exec. produced by my good friend Jonathan Dana).

I watched "Boat Trip" yesterday. It's a comedy about a gay cruise - the story is so stupid that some moments are even funny. Less than ten minutes are filmed on Hydra - in the harbor area (+ on one of the beaches).
Jerry and Nick are two best buddies whose love lives have hit rock bottom, Jerry's especially, having just vomited all over his fiancé on a hot air balloon trip prior to proposing to her. To escape their troubles and find women, they book a trip on board a cruise-liner, unaware the travel agent has just played a horrid trick on them in retaliation for Nick offending his secret gay lover. And that's the trick; it's a gay cruise-liner for gay men to meet and mingle. Slowly but surely, the two main characters begin to realize this and in turn get into a lot of humorous predicaments.

Filmed in 2001 and not released to US theaters until 2003.

Filmed entirely in Cologne, Germany and on a cruise ship out of Athens, Greece. The ship cruised the Mediterranean for ten days while filming and stopped in Alexandria, Istanbul and Rhodes. The island scenes were filmed on the isle of Hydra in Greece.

You are so right about "Boat Trip" - even the less sophisticated U.S. audience disliked it - and the critical reviewers uniformly panned it. It made less than $9M at the box office - despite wide release - and was credited with helping to destroy Cuba Gooding Jr.s career - right after he won the Academy Award for "Jerry Maguire."
Despite the Hydra footage - I have not been able to bring myself to rent it. ;-) - J.

Perhaps, it would've done better had it been filmed on Mykonos... greater authenticity may have lent to better story line and acting. Ambience.

I'll save my money, as well, Jazz.

This is funny because I just listened to the CD of the band Sophia "Technology won't save us". Mrs. Loren looks good, but so does Mrs. Sophia we met on Hydra this year.

Dem, I love the CD's you gave me. I especially love that song with the children, can you give me the greek text and it's explanation ?

Henning thank you, I'm content to have at least the same name with her!

Thank you for your CD, I loved your songs from "Energy of Slaves" and "Book of Longing",
especially your music for "My Baby wasn't there".
Did you like the CD of band "Sophia"? It sounds interesting! :)

Another Greek film (of the many) filmed on Hydra is:

"Let's get to love each other darling" (1984)

by director Giannis Dalianidis
with Stathis Psaltis

It is one of those trashy video films that were
filmed in Greece in the eighties but you can
always enjoy Hydra.

Watch the full movie here:

WoW, Jazz. I'll go with "achingly beautiful" and "emotionally compelling" ~ great selections for the trailer. I hope I'll be able to see this wide-screen in a theater. Your friends really did a fine job, and you sure can feel Hydra.

Thanks!
