Yep, that song's a gem - as are many on 'Viva Hate'. But when it comes M's solo output, I'd plump for the 'Vauxhall and I' and 'Your Arsenal' albums. As to The Smiths - all their albums are essential.
I find myself liking Morrisey in spite of myself. A lot of his lyrics make no sense and are very annoying he's also incredably pretentious and egotystic (I have forgiven Jesus) but I really like his voice and his opinions and outlook and quite a few of his lyrics, especially from the Smiths days. my favourites are Sweet and Tender Hooligan and Shoplifters of the World Unite.

Ghoti, I'm surprised a Leonard Cohen fan of all people ("I was born with the gift of a golden voice") can't see comedy when it rears its head. "I have forgiven Jesus", despite my reservations about the current fawning over Morrissey, is the funniest songtitle yet from a man who has long amused us in that department: "Some girls are bigger than others", "Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me", "Vicar in a Tutu", "Shoplifters of the World Unite", "Sweet and Tender Hooligan", "Hairdresser on Fire" etc.

or how about the "november spawned a monster" music video where he's all by himself in the desert with his button-up shirt half unbuttoned and untucked and humping big rocks? now THAT'S funny! hahahahaha.
anyone catch the new dvd and live cd? it's awesome. i got to see it the day before it came out at universal city walk in hollywood. i was quite impressed with the band myself. they made his music more enjoyable. and, well, morrissey was just morrissey. hahaha.

30-minute-interview with the great man.
inexplicably he doesn't mention leonard.
Wednesday 18 February
John Wilson presenting
Morrissey
The British singer-songwriter Morrissey, who stormed onto the music scene in the early 1980s with his band The Smiths, is about to turn 50 and is celebrating it with the release of a new solo album Years of Refusal.
In a candid interview for this special edition of Front Row, Morrissey looks back over the last 50 years and his early years growing up in Manchester's Moss Side.
He also reflects on composing with Johnny Marr, whether The Smiths are ever likely to re-form, and how it feels to be still belting out the songs as he approaches his half-century.

how many roads must a man go down
before he reaches billy fury way?!
apparently, according to the CNJ article, morrissey's a big billy fury fan.
A FORGOTTEN path in West Hampstead could be in line for a rock ’n’ roll makeover as a campaign to name it after quiff-haired crooner Billy Fury gathers momentum...
...Alan Lewis, editor of Record Collector, said Fury had a lasting appeal which means his records still sell for hundreds of pounds.
“He was one of the most enduringly popular figures in 20th-century pop,” said Mr Lewis.
“His appeal ranges from listeners to BBC Radio 2’s Sound Of the 60s Show to more contemporary figures like Morrissey who is obsessed with Billy”...

i was going to post the article on a billy fury forum but someone's beaten me to it.
p.s. how many roads etc does leonard have named after him?

Morrissey - and jo brand
i live near the maudsley psychiatric hospital where jo used to work.
i used to pop in regularly - to use the showers.
this was over two decades ago - i expect they've tightened up security since.
...CONTROVERSIAL comedian Jo Brand showed her caring side in a visit to the county this week.
...The comic, who is well-known for a wealth of television appearances, has lots of Herefordshire connections – her forthcoming novel, The More You Ignore Me, is about two Morrissey fans based in the county...
