LEONARD COHEN AND JUNO AWARDS - 2013

Post by sturgess66 »

Leonard Cohen has been nominated in three different categories this year - "Artist of the Year," "Songwriter of the Year," and the audience-voted "Juno Fan Choice Award."

Also, Adam Cohen has been nominated in the category for "Adult Contemporary Album."

Award nominations/categories listed here -
http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2 ... tin_b.html

So - there should be news to report.
Also, as noted in another thread, there is confirmation that Adam will be one of the "presenters."

Here are excerpts from a few articles with mention of Leonard's nomination -
Juno awards attract Canadian music royalty to Regina - Teen heart throb Justin Bieber has four nominations including Artist of the Year, followed by Marianas Trench, Leonard Cohen and Metric with three each.
http://www.660news.com/2013/04/19/juno- ... to-regina/
Canadian music stars gather for Juno gala - Rush, Leonard Cohen nominated - Other Canadians with multiple nominations include Céline Dion, Leonard Cohen, Kathleen Edwards and Rush, who were inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame on Thursday.

Juno Awards: Who should win this year’s big prizes - ARTIST OF THE YEAR
THE NOMINEES: Carly Rae Jepsen; Deadmau5; Johnny Reid; Justin Bieber; Leonard Cohen.
WHO WILL WIN: Leonard Cohen. Last year’s Old Ideas basically drowned upon delivery in fawning reviews. He’s getting up there at 78 so he’ll get something. This would be the logical gesture.
WHO SHOULD WIN: Leonard Cohen. None of his co-nominees would argue that Cohen isn’t the reigning “artist” in this pack.

From Twitter -
@Julia_Piper 1- If Justin Bieber wins Artist of the Year over Leonard Cohen I will never watch another award show. Ever. Again. #Junos
@_SaarahT - I love Leonard Cohen but I doubt he'll win Fan Choice because the majority of his hardcore fans probably don't even know the internet exists

Bingo, CBC. Well expressed.

Thanks for posting these, sturgess.

Juno Awards predictions: The good, the Bieber and the painfully mediocre
Justin Bieber is nominated for Artist of the Year.

Rush has the advantage in the Group of the Year category. The trio just made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
A+
BY MIKE BELL, POSTMEDIA NEWS APRIL 19, 2013
Much like being tasked to keep Justin Bieber in his shirt, predicting the results of awards shows is a fool’s errand.
Often it requires to you to crawl inside the heads of people who think about such things as art and talent in an entirely different way, have entirely different drives and entirely different tastes. Or, put another way, it requires dumbing down.
That’s why it’s always a helpful (i.e. self-absorbed) thing to be able to cram your own opinion into the conversation while also acknowledging that not everyone one views the world with such 20/20 vision.
So, with this year’s Juno Awards and the Canadian music industry hitting Regina this Sunday, here’s a list of who the awards should go to and a stab in the dark at those who, ultimately, probably, will get the nod in the major categories.
In other words, pity this poor fool.
Single of the year
Nominees: Billy Talent (Viking Death March), Carly Rae Jepsen (Call Me Maybe), Hedley (Kiss You Inside Out), Serena Ryder (Stompa), The Sheepdogs (The Way It Is).
By far, the easiest one to predict. So easy that there’s no way even the Juno voters could get this wrong. Look at the list. If you’re not immediately mouthing the words, “Hey, I just met you/Call me crazy ...,” then you are insane or you’ve been cloistered in a monastery for the past two years (hopefully doing the Lord’s work and making wine and beer). B.C.-born Jepsen’s catchy, saccharine-coated earworm was everywhere, niggling its way into pop culture via incessant airplay, ridiculously stupid YouTube tributes and product placement in things that the kids like. And no, it’s not the most finely crafted pop song of the bunch — Ryder’s glorious, grinding, get-up ’n’ get-down Stompa fits that bill — but it was the most omnipresent and that trumps all.
Who should win: Ryder.
Who will win: Jepsen.
Album of the year
Carly Rae Jepsen (Kiss), Celine Dion (Sans Attendre), Hedley (Storms), Justin Bieber (Believe), Marianas Trench (Ever After).

Ye gods. Out of all of the amazing music created in this country over the past year we’re given a list that only a 14-year-old girl and her francophone mother could compile or relate to. Seriously, faults and all, at least the Polaris Prize short list is something to take national pride in and the winner winds up in the ballpark of being artistically sound, but this group of five seems as if it was assembled using names written on the binder of a hopelessly nerdy teenager. In fact, it’s more notable for who’s not here than who is and that’s a list that’s almost too long to print.
Who should win (if they were nominated): Diamond Rings, Kathleen Edwards, Leonard Cohen, Rae Spoon. . . .
Who will win: The Biebs. Consider the Grammy snub now paid in full.
Artist of the year
Carly Rae Jepsen; Deadmau5; Johnny Reid; Justin Bieber; Leonard Cohen.
If album of the year was embarrassing, then consider this category baffling. Two pop stars, a DJ, a Scottish country-soul star and a musical icon should be the beginnings of a “walked into a bar” joke and not something that a human being should be asked to make sense of, let alone assess. While, admittedly, there is a certain amount of artistry in what each of them do — even lip-synching, temper tantrums and Twitteridiocy — to put them on any similar level, in any equal race is like comparing apples, oranges, bacon, leisure suits and skinny, white teen trainwrecks.
Who should win: If Cohen loses to any of the others on the list in any category other than Least Amount of Cigarettes and Liquor Consumed and Women Seduced, then you can head back to that monastery and confidently proclaim, “God is dead.”
Who will win: Reid. On a hunch and an unanswered prayer.

Group of the year

Billy Talent; Marianas Trench; Metric; Rush; The Sheepdogs.

Rush would obviously be the Leonard Cohen of the group, considering their 40-year-history, undeniable influence, lasting legacy and their recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. An amazing Canadian act that has taken this nation’s music around the world — and into bromance comedies! — they deserve every accolade that comes their way. Except this one. Their latest release, Clockwork Angels, is a fine, solid entry into the Rush catalogue, but it’s not a particularly great record. If that’s what this category is based on — and, as always, it’s entirely debatable that it is — then they should be skipped over for Metric’s wonderful electro-pop offering, Synthetica, which is just as globally embraced, and frankly, more current. Their Coachella appearance this year, not to mention the love from Lou Reed, shows they’ve hit heights that few Canuck bands have hit.
Who should win: Metric. Best album of the bunch.
Who will win: Rush. Hall of Fame Induction. And a Juno. Which do you think means more?

I guess I am just not a nice person. I've been laughing out loud at the outraged/baffled Bieber fans on Twitter asking, in their special profanity-laced way, "How could this happen and who the [CENSORED] is Leonard Cohen anyway?" Ah, well, maybe a few of them will educate themselves. I admit, my own plunge into fandom is recent but at least I knew who he is.

Since 21 September 1934, he wins day after day, day in day out, the Artist of the Century Award, so let say O.K. for today's Juno also, but you know... We know.

Thanks for the update Leslie. Congratulations to Leonard!

It seems strange that they would have already have given away artist of the year and album of the year awards.

I know someone personally who has been nominated for 6 Juno Awards in previous years (Harry Manx) who has not ever won. I remember when I was watching for reports to see if he won, the announcements were made the day before the actual ceremony. I never could figure that out.
From what I can tell the award ceremony tonight will have live performances (KD Lang for sure) and more awards.
We are not able to watch it here as we can't get CTV. I called them a few days ago and they said they would not be doing live streaming on the internet either this year. Bummer...
I hope we are able to see it afterwards on you tube or the Juno Awards website.

Yes, thanks Leslie. All seems a bit arse for elbow to me. So, the major awards are given out at a gala dinner the night before the ceremony. And that's a good idea because.....

It's a bit strange/confusing - I guess they save things for a big two-hour television broadcast? It is a bit odd that they do not televise all the performances from the Gala Dinner Event. Also, I know from years past that they like to surprise.

An article in Hamilton's Spectator provides some information about what awards were already announced at the Gala Dinner - and what is left for the two-hour television broadcast tonight.
http://www.thespec.com/whatson/article/ ... ham-s-bets

Adam Cohen performed at the Gala Dinner last night. As well, he will be a presenter of an award at the televised event tonight (according to a post on his Facebook site - and as posted by Goldin/Roman in a thread here - viewtopic.php?f=56&t=33745&p=328705&hilit=adam#p328705 -

Winners for two categories in which Leonard has been nominated will be announced tonight - Songwriter of the Year, and Fan Choice Award.

Here are some excerpts from the Spectator article (the article states incorrectly that Leonard Cohen has a show in St. John's this evening) -
...

And where else would you find an awards’ show that didn’t proudly present such a prestigious award as Artist of the Year live on national television.

You’d think that would be the big one, wouldn’t you, Artist of the Year?

But no, when the Juno Awards’ two-hour extravaganza is broadcast live from Regina Sunday night on CTV at 8 p.m., there will be only seven category winners announced: Album of the Year, Single of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Breakthrough Group of the Year, Group of the Year, Adult Alternative Album of the Year and the Juno Fan Choice Award.

Artist of the Year will be announced along with 34 other Juno winners at a dinner Saturday in a red-bricked convention centre on the outskirts of Regina. The gala dinner will be attended by several hundred movers and shakers in the Canadian music industry but not televised.

...

SONGWRITER

Always a strong category, songwriting is something Canadians do exceptionally well. It’s unusual for a group to be nominated as in the case of the Arkells, so it’s great to see the Hamilton rock band’s well-crafted songs (Michigan Left/On Paper/Whistleblower) included here. And, if you aren’t aware of the music of Hanna Georgas or Afie Juvanen (who performs under the name Bahamas), you should have a listen. Kathleen Edwards probably deserves it for Voyager, a moving—up album written mostly in her former house on Hamilton’s Glenfern Avenue, but it’s hard to imagine anyone taking this one from The Bard, himself, Leonard Cohen.

***

JUNO FAN CHOICE AWARD

A strange salad of 10 nominees, including Cohen, Michael Bublé and Nickelback, this category is made for pop stars like Justin Bieber. The critics may not like him, but the kids who vote sure do.

...
This site offers live streaming online of the event - it could be available only in Canada - I don't know.
http://sitekreator.com/junoawards2013/livestream.html
[And oops - it's a satellite TV pay site]

...
I'm editing to add that, going back to February, the idea was in my head of the possibility of Leonard appearing at the Juno TV event tonight (based on the cancellation of the second St. John's show that seemed to coincide maybe with announcements of Juno nominations?). But - I don't know. I edited a post I made earlier that may have suggested otherwise. I really have no idea other than speculation about that possibility ... and I suspect a lot of us are wondering. We will be finding out soon.

I watched a video last night showing highlights of performances from the Gala Dinner - and full video of Anne Murray's performance - and now I can't find that link.
