Interesting Covers

Post by Kush »

I dont quite like the word "covers" but it fits when an artist other than the composer performs a song. As it used to be earlier when composers would compose and singers would sing.

Redemption Song (Bob Marley) - Cassandra Wilson

The only redemption I can offer is beneath this dirty hood...

From master coverer Joe Cocker, how about Van Morrison's Into the Mystic (live version best):

Kush I like the various Waylon Jennings tracks you have posted on the forum, but my admiration for your musical taste always breaks down with the girly tones of Ms Parton.

No matter, here's the supreme cover of Knockin on Heaven's Door:

You mentioned star trek in another thread. Star trek's funniest cover (again):

Well Ms. Parton is a girl. And a pretty voluptuous one at that. Actually I think her voice is much more conventional than say Willie Nelson's that I can understand is much more of an acquired taste.
The only voice that I can think of off the top of my head that I just could not bear to hear is Tom Waits. I understand he is very good at what he does, I also know I will never hear his music....thats how it goes. Enjoyed both tracks Diane.

Ironically enough following on the links from your very fine Knock Knock Knockin on Heaven's Door link I came across another superb video of it by Ladysmith Black Mambazo with ...with .....wait for it.....DOLLY PARTON !! :)

Cool! You do know how to play an ace. Her tones are offset v. nicely by LBM. It's a great song in all it's incarnations isn't it. It would be obvious of me to post Eric's version, so here's Roger Waters:

Two terrific covers by Ol' Waylon of songs by Tim Hardin and Paul Simon...

The Boxer

The Carnival Song

and this one is actually a quirky self penned song...

Hi Kush,

Heard the Waylon links you posted and enjoyed them. Just borrowed a Waylon CD, "Right For The Time."
Like it. "The Boxer" and "Carnival Song" are on the CD. "Carnival Song" very much reminds me of the vocal
quality of Johnny Cash on his Rick Rubin produced "Unearthed" box set recordings. As much as it does that,
the vocal intonation reminds me of a particular song on the "Unearthed" Cash set. Can't remember
which. Will have to find the time to go through the Cash set to identify which song. :) If I didn't know
otherwise, would have thought that "Carnival Song" was possibly an outtake of the Rubin / Cash sessions.

Hi Steven,

You are correct - The Boxer and Carnival song are from the Right for The Time album. I dont have the album itself but I have been downloading individual songs of his from different albums for my very own personal collection. Have about 35 songs so far including these two. I have only one Johnny Cash album now, back in the 80s and early 90s I used to hear Johnny Cash all the time - maybe too much for my own good - and at some point I simply Johnny Cashed myself out and now almost never hear his music although I do enjoy his recordings with the Highwaymen. But yes, I can see the Carnival song as sung by Waylon is Cashesque.

Hi Kush,

"Carnival Song" is my favorite from the CD. Have played the CD a number of times and will be Waylon'd out by
the time I return the CD next week. Waylon didn't write "Carnival Song," though he sings it as if he lived the
song. Rich metaphors in the song's lyrics; great songwriting.

Steven - I think it works rather well in Spanish. The words flow well with the music.
Another one, this time life as a poker game

this song is almost like one of those ancient Hindu or Greek mythologies or something....an assortment of gods and goddesses playing games with mere mortals :)
