Songs that may be forgotten, or many people have never heard

Post by John Etherington »

For some reason this song just popped into my mind:

"Wolverton Mountain" by Claude King

Thanks Leonka,

That's exactlly the sort of song I was looking for! ("North to Alaska" by Johnny Horton"). It was one of the few songs that I remember before my initiation into pop music in January 1962 (aged 10). I was going through my John Wayne phase at that time, and saw "North to Alaska" along with other movies such as "The Alamo", "The Commancheros" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (all with memorable songs).

Here's another personal favourite from that era:

"Sea of Heartbreak" by Don Gibson

John & LEONKA .... good to hear this music of which it can be said memories are made ... but rather than north to Alaska, why not head down the way for some of this ... much better in its undiluted version though ...

Bequia,

"Jamaica Farewell"!...that takes me back to primary school (aged about 6). I never knew the song had that title. "Memories are Made of This", I remember well, but the others are new to me. From around 1957, I remember "Yellow Bird", which was recorded by both Belafonte and the Kingston Trio.

All good things, John E

Here's a song by John Leyton that sparked all my dreams of future teen romance (Son This is She):

...another one from John that is a real classic of its genre (like this one)... BTW, listening to the background vocal on Leyton's songs reminded me that Bronski with Jimmy Somerville covered Johnny as part of a medley ...

I couldn't forget that one of John's...a classic, indeed! I've never heard the other one before (amazing how controversial "death"discs were at the time).

Now we've had John, let's not forget Johnny!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Okk3ARBn2Tk ("It Keeps Right on a Hurtin'" by Johnny Tillotson).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UixEZMEH ... re=related ("Judy, Judy, Judy" by Johnny Tillotson).

By the way, I'm trying to avoid the youtube prompts...it's more fun to do this by association.

…Johnny also had a hit in the US with the theme song to a TV show that launched the acting career of an Academy Award winner (song begins at 1:00) … even when it keeps right on a hurtin’, I learned from another Johnny that you gotta keep a-rollin' … something others learned too (I wonder what became of that bass player) ...

All good stuff...I love the surfin' era...I hadn't heard that Johnny Burnette track, but it's authentic rock 'n roll (shades of Eddie Cochran)...oh - and I met Keith Relf when he was with Medicine Head (sweet guy). Now, let's have some real action:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9gg2gX-ZrA ("The Action" by Freddy Cannon).

- alternatively there's this kind of action (I met the lead singer "out of his head" in a bar in the 70s, and he asked me if I was a musician, cause I had long hair):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUuaVWIP ... re=related ("I'll Keep On Holding On" by the Action).

Hi Bequia,

Thanks for the go go stuff... I first saw the Byrds with the go go dancers when I picked up a baragin Byrds box-set with DVD some months ago (very surreal!). I'm not familiar with the Cannibal and the Headhunters version of "Land of 1000 Dances" but I know the versions by the Walker Brothers and Wilson Pickett.

But - did you notice?! - someone's put Burt Bacharach's version of "Little Red Book" onto the Love video (and I can't find the proper video on you tube). Here's Love's version anyway:
