CONCERT REPORT: Geneva, October 27

Postby Christophe_s » Tue Oct 28, 2008 1:34 pm

Hi,

As no one posted for now, I registered myself and would give my contribution.

So, it was a beautiful evening yesterday in Geneva. The crowd was really warm for Mr. Cohen, with a lot of standing ovations (but it's certainly the same every night, isn't it?).

Compared to the gig in Montreux Jazz Festival this Summer, the sound was a bit less good (but Montreux was the most perfect sound I ever heard and you can believe me as I see something like 300 gigs a year). The first part was also a bit less intense. But the second part! There was something really spiritual in the air (once again, it's certainly the same every night). And no "Sisters Of Mercy" and "A Thousand Kisses Deep" (but "The Partisan" and "FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT").

And now, the setlist:

1st Set
Dance me to the end of love
The Future
Ain't no cure for love
Bird on the wire
Everybody knows
Hey, that's no way to say good bye
In my secret life
Who by fire
Heart with no Companion
Anthem

2nd set
Tower of song
Suzanne
Gypsy wife
The Partisan
Boogie Street
Hallelujah
Democracy
I'm your man
Take this waltz

Encores
So long, Marianne
First we take Manhattan

Famous Blue Raincoat
If it be your will
Closing time

I tried to leave you
Whither thou goest

(I'm not completly sure about the place of "Hey, that's now way to say goodbye", but I'm sure it was before "Heart with no companion" and "Anthems" by the way)

And for my little part, I saw "Famous Blue Raincoat" and nothing else counts.

Last but not least - maybe - a small bonus for the french speaking. An article I published two weeks ago in the magazine I work for. Good reading...

I fully agree with Christophe, it was one of these evenings when you forget the world around and what counts is the magical, mysterious moment of your life and YOUR Leonard Cohen. I had waited for this moment more than 30 years.

'My Cohen' - because each of us probably has its own intimate relationship with his poetry and his music.

I must say I was quite afraid whether Geneva's Arena is a best place for listening Leonard Cohen live for the first time and what stroke me yesterday is this incredible, warm atmosphere he created with his audience, in particular in the second part. Needless to say in these euphoric standing ovations the Encores lasted 45 minutes.

Christophe, I placed "Hey, that's now way to say goodbye" just before "Who by fire", the only musical arrangement which sounded to me as a controversy between a beautiful hispano-arabic solo introduction by Javier Mas and the Hammond organs which "sounded like a bubble gum".

Carine,
thanks a lot. Just a detail, but the concert ended with "Whither thou goest" sung by all the artists, which was a part of the blessing Leonard gave us that evening.

Hallo together
I saw Leonard Cohen 1974 in Ludwigshafen/Germany, the second time in 1993 in Zürich, the third time 2008 in
Montreux and I don`t hope the last time at the 25th october in Zürich .I have never seen such a well-balanced concert like in Montreux. It was really perfect. The acoustic sound was amazing.I would like to go to London ,to see him again at the Royal Albert Hall.
But I am afraid it is too expensive for me.Maybe someone could help me and accompany me.
I want to see him again, I hear his music for 40 years. TSCHOU Bucki

And now, for the french speakers, my little review (it's a double review in fact, with Leonard Cohen and Daniel Johnston, the day after in Geneva too):
