Charley Webb playing clarinet

Post by jim devlin »

Hi, hoping someone can help me with this: am I right in thinking Charley has played her clarinet on the intro to Who By Fire? If so, any YouTube footage? The reason I ask is that she is credited with clarinet on the 'Live In Dublin', and I don't see it; perhaps it's referring to her previously playing it? Yes, but when?? Any idea/s??
Thanks in advance.

Hi Jim

Charley certainly played the clarinet at a couple of points in the set on the 2012-13 tour but I don't think she was still doing it by September 2013. I can see the clarinet on photos of the stage set up in Oakland in March 2013 but not for example in my photos from Antwerp and Brussels in June 2013 so maybe they re-jigged the arrangements for the summer 2013 European dates. I think she played it in Who By Fire and the intro to Take This Waltz but I am relying on memory so could very well be wrong. I'm sure someone will have photos or will be able to find some YouTube footage to give you a more definitive answer.

Hi Jim, I remembered this B&W image.

Ghent (it appears to be the same date as the one below of 12th because Charley is wearing the exact same outfit) photo by Betty Vercauteren

Here's a link to Arlene's blog with the B&W photo and Roman Gavrilin's video embedded:

Roman’s video - Berlin Sept 5th 2012

Everybody Knows & Who By Fire
You can see Charley play her clarinet briefly at 9:40 and then longer with Neil's organ at 13:00 and then again at 13:40 until the end of the song.

(btw - I love Roman's quick thinking when the line "who in solitude" is sung and he instantly instinctively pans to the lone security guard!)

EDIT:
I did a little further research and it seems to confirm Wendy’s recollection of Take This Waltz as well as the definite ones of Who By Fire.

There is video evidence of Charley playing the clarinet in Who By Fire in the 2012 tour in Europe and the USA but I can’t find any during the 2013 tour. With Take This Waltz you can’t see her actually playing but in the videos the instrument is on a stand in front of her suggesting that she would use it.

IMO it is as you said credited in recognition that she does in fact play this instrument full stop and not specifically at this Dublin concert. I looked at LC's official site and the listing there of the band is in complete identical order of what they do to that of the Dublin disc except "Backing Vocals" have been added to Mitch Watkins repertoire for Dublin. http://www.leonardcohen.com/us/tour/band On that basis, I would say it's just a generic listing with Mitch being the exception.

Who By Fire:

Take This Waltz:

New York - MSG 18th Dec 2012
At the start you can see Charley put it on a stand

New York – Radio City Music Hall 6th & 7th April 2013
Gwen says: A real crowd pleaser and something I always look forward to is Javier Mas’ introduction to Who By Fire on the bandurria with Roscoe Beck joining on the stand up bass and Charley Webb on clarinet.

Hope this helps. Other could probably enlarge on this.
(btw - I haven’t watched my disc yet; saving it as a Christmas treat!)

Big thankyou's to Wendy and Bev - I appreciate your help and researches and visuals etc. I'm updating the discography in Harvey K's recent book and wanted to check, and then double-check. Thankyou both very much.
